Hi guys

Decided to get a 6-series used but had some questions which I am hoping some of you aficionados can help me with considering I have been a Merc guy up until now.

1. Are there any 'must have' options people would suggest?

2. Would it be better to wait until the end of the year to pick up more of a discount? Autotrader seems to have some very nice ones atm from a quick browse.

3. I would be doing no more than 6,000 miles a year, would it better to look for something post-2015 as I think that was when the facelift came into effect.

4. I want an auto as most of the mileage would be town driving with once a month motorway trip (London-Leeds and back). Thoughs on the 640i automatic?

Thanks guys

Re 4 - You can't get the 6er in manual so the gearbox is a bit of a moot point! Best to go and try one. I've not driven a 6er but in general the BMW autos are excellent.

They're pretty well specced as standard, at 6k miles a year I think I'd favour the 640i over the 640d. I did 70k miles in a 640d and it was a lovely cruiser and I loved its looks and interior.

The only gripes I had were the lifeless steering and the size of it in car parks/tight spaces, plus the ride was horrendous with the 20inch wheels and runflats.

The 640d offers a lovely performance/economy mix I reckon(0 to 60 in 5.3 secs and it returned a consistent 40mpg in my hands).

I do 5k miles a year - I have a 650, and it’s excellent. Why bother with the diesel when you’re doing no distance and could have a V8? smile

Is that dirt on the lens or in the car?

Love the colour combo, mine was deep sea blue/ivory white leather. Tanzanite blue is one of my fave colours, I like that a lot.

One thing if you do get it check to see if it meets the ULEZ requirements as they'll be getting rolled out to the North & South circular, it should be fine but it's worth checking.

Make sure you are doing that long run to Leeds or you could end up with some expensive unwanted bills, see if you can extend the Manufacturers Warranty.

Why buy a diesel for 6k p/a mostly in London traffic, seems stupid to me.

I would go petrol for the amount of miles your are doing - made a similar call last year and bought a 640i to cover 10k-15k per yr in.

Look at the BMW approved used site, there are a few 17 plate 640i GC's are £31k-£32k that were floating around at close to £40k when I bought mine...

Have you driven the 640d MSport? The ride is really not great with a combination of 20s, runflats and M Sport. Rest is great.

Thanks for the input guys...

I thought the newer model cars didn't have issues with the Diesel filters which is why I was looking at those, even for minimal milage.

I also want an automatic and had always thought they don't mix well with petrol engines!!

Can someone wise me up which is the best option? 90% of the time would be short haul driving with the rest a bit further/motorway.

I'd agree with this for sure, both my E90 330i and E53 X5 4.8iS didn't suit the Auto in any way shape or form for me. Yet I did think that the Auto suited my E90 330d and F13 640d very well in fairness.

I’ve got the 650, and auto suits it fine - the current 8 speed box is excellent. smile

The current 8 speed was(mostly)excellent in my 640d...but I'm still not sure I'd trust it with a petrol engine though. Maybe I'm scarred too much with the Bmw/petrol Auto combo. frown

Surprisingly the current M5 has the 8 speed Auto(they scrapped the DCT), so I guess Bmw have finally decided to put the effort in regarding the petrol/Auto combo thankfully(they needed to imo). smile

A colleague of mine absolutely agrees with this. He wants to love the car, but hates the ride.

It is the worst thing about the car annoyingly, I ditched the run flats and it did improve things, but then I suffered three punctures in a short space of time. I then wished I'd just stuck with the run flats.
