Go on then, do me a What Car?
Discussion
Currently running an L322 FFRR which I've had for about 6 years and 70k miles. It's the petrol NA AJ V8 version, and we have thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's time for a change now.
If I could buy another, 6 years newer and with <50k miles, I almost certainly would, but once JLR introduced the TDV8, petrol sales all but died apart from a few SC models, which are very expensive for what they are and comedic on fuel consumption.
So what do I want?
- large enough to take two large dogs, so it has to be an estate or an SUV (MPVs need not apply)
- auto
- petrol or petrol hybrid. I live near London and I'm not paying a gazillion pounds ULEZ tax if I need to go in. I'm extremely reluctant to spend a decent amount of money on a diesel which may well up being a boat anchor in terms of ease of sale in a few years' time. I could be wrong about that but the uncertainly would stop me.
- not a Mondeo. I hired a newish one recently and I really didn't like it, for all sorts of reasons.
I realise that I'm neither looking for my dream car and nor am I going to find it in this category, but I would like something at least slightly interesting and something which isn't going to plunge me into the pit of despair every time I have to drive it.
Budget = ideally up to £15k but could run to £20k if something really tickled my fancy. We need the car but equally we don't do loads of miles p.a. so I can't see the sense in blowing any more cash than that.
Fire away!

Good shout, that looks quite interesting, although it's only a year newer than what I have. Quite a hike in outlay if you look at it like that. But worth further investigation, thanks.
As you've already identified the petrol SUV market is small but there are some good options out there:
Grand Cherokee SRT these are a fun car (for an SUV & for some reason they hold their money well) the engine is strong & being N/A will cause you little or no issues, but as you say it's only a year newer, but you can purchase them for a lower price:

XC60 3.0T SE Lux size may be an issue but if it's not 300bhp is not to be sniffed at.

Audi S6

RS6 but these can be true wallet breakers, so do your homework.

Well, I'm back again.
I ended up buying a Touareg Hybrid, which has the 3.0 V6 from the (R?)S5 plus 50bhp-worth of milk float, but it's had a recurring fault since shortly after I bought it so it's going back. Shame as it's actually quite a nice car.
So I'll work through the suggestions above but if anyone has any more, please fire away. The RX450 looks not to be an option, the batteries raise the boot floor too big for the dogs to stand up in it.

Shame about the Touareg.
Left field suggestions but what about a Skoda Superb estate with the 3.6 V6 engine? - rare but massive space and decent performance despite its Q car looks.
Or a Subaru Legacy? - decent car if you can get over the typical Japanese interior.
cheers
Chris
