Considering Toyota Aygo 1.0 vvti

Thinking of buying my 17yr old niece one of these as her first car, budget is £3k or so, as insurance is likely to be minty for her first one.
Quite a few cars around (petrol manual 5 door).
Anything in particular to look for ?

We had an 09 plate three door for about 4 years and 30k miles,was a cracking little car. In that time had to change the exhaust twice, had water pump leak and inerior door handle broke. Still loved it mind and running costs were very good. You might be able to get the citroen C1 version a bit cheaper.

Rather than the Aygo I'd recommend the IQ it has the same engine but is a bit of a nicer place to be.

She mentioned liking a little Citroen. Are they the same car underneath? Not usually a Citroen fan tbh

Had an Aygo for 9 years now. 07 plate which I bought with about 10k on the clock at two years old. "Sport" model with aircon, remote locking, fog lamps, nice paint, alloys. (The aircon is still ice cold after 11 years).

It's now got almost 80k on the clock and here's a list of things that have gone wrong in that time:

Nothing, nil, nada.

Here's a list of things that it has failed an MOT on:

Here's a list of non wear and tear parts I've had to spend money on:

A clutch as it was getting a little juddery - £300.00 fitted and that also included the price of a service. (Yes, really)
An exhaust back end - They don't last forever, under £60.00 fitted.

Running costs are virtually nil. £20 tax, 55 MPG all day long (can do 60+ on a run), tyres last forever, insurance is the lowest group there is.

Bad bits? It does leak a little water into the rear footwells when driving in heavy rain. Known problem, I just live with it.

It's just a brilliant little car and I'm not sure I'll ever sell it.

Edit to add that of all the cars I've owned over the years, including a few other petrol Toyotas, the Aygo is the one I'd choose if I had to bet my life on it getting me from A to B. It's that good.

Well tbh that's a pretty good summing up. Seen other good owner reviews also tonight.
It's a first car and she doesn't want an " old ladies car" but quite liked the shape of these.

Was in the same position earlier this year for my 17 year old. Yes, the Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo are the same car. It's a Toyota design, all made in the same factory and most parts are stamped Toyota. The Aygo appear to keep their value a bit more, as they were more expensive new and later ones had a five year warranty. I did plenty of research, it's worth going to C1OC forum.
I managed to find a privately advertised 2013 Citroen C1, in very good condition and can confirm they are peanuts to run (apart from young driver insurance).

Years and years ago. 2007? I took an Aygo from Manchester to West Germany and back in winter.

The only issue I had was a prick coming up behind me fast on the motorway in Germany in a Skoda Octavia VRS ..on English plates. Everyone else was Uber courteous and gave me loads of room.

Fantastic cars.

Funny enough was in an indie Toyota dealer this morning on a social as they had a C plate Toyota homogenised b class car for sale. anyway, we got chatting; bloke has sold Toyotas for decades and he reserved his biggest criticism for the Aygo. He unbelievably said if I am looking for a first car for my son to look at the Hyundai over the Aygo.

I don't think it's quite up to the normal Toyota standards TBH. Compare the Aygo to something like a Mk1 Yaris, and you can see there have been costs pared down to a minimum. In places I think they might have gone too far (for example missing out one of the engine cylinders). Nevertheless,it seems a cheap and reliable car (Door locks aside)

The gf’s sister had an aygo from new and managed over 100k miles in it, regularly doing 40mile commute to work. I think it eventually died at 150k.

She didn’t look after it, at one point never serviced it for 40k miles and it carried on fine. For the price they seem like a good buy and plenty of options.

The 1.0 engine in the Aygo is a gem. 65kg in actual weight and a beautiful sound from the 3 cylinders.

It is also very easy to place, feel where it is, feel the steering etc.

The mkI Yaris that I drove was remote feeling and that's a compliment. It was awful.

Hate the vibration and noise from the 3 cylinder lump. Feels like it's misfiring all the time to me. The 4 cylinder is the real peach. (Horses for courses though). I like Toyota stuff - it's really well built and very good, but IMO the Aygo is not up there with the best that they did. But Toyota set a very high bar on these kind of things, and saying it's not the best they built is still a compliment. One of these or a Up? No competition.

My wife is on her second Aygo with the first one lasting 10 years and 100k miles which she recently sold to a new driver and it was totally reliable sailing thru every mot with minimal outlay.

Her new (2017 my) should last the same and is a pleasure to use around town with 58 mpg average and for myself at 6 ft 3" i find it nice and comfortable....cracking little cars


(I agree the 3 cyl sounds rather nice)

How does the latest Aygo compare to the first one?

As nippy or different? It looks? more refined bit maybe not as peppy?

Now the new one has clocked over 3k miles it seems to have loosened up and feels very slightly quicker than our older one with a far more up market interior and better seats.

I have been using it for work while my car is having some work done and getting 58mpg is wonderful compared with 20 mpg average and sitting at 70mph on the motorway is approx 3250 rpm which isnt too noisy..
