Afternoon PH.

I’m looking at picking up a Golf in the next few days, I’ve spotted a couple I like and this one seems to be the best of the bunch value wise,

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Looking for advice from anyone who’s bought / owned one of these in terms of what to be looking out for,

Alongside this although my heart is telling me petrol is the way to go, I do cover a minimum of 22-25k PA with a daily 65 mile Motorway commute, in terms of practicality, would I be better suited to a GTD ?

Owing to the fact diesels seem to be dying a death as of late I can pick up a 2 year younger, more highly specced GTD with less miles for the same price,

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

so is the driving experience really as bad as people make out on the derv variant ? Or is it the internet rally pro’s talking it down.

Thanks !

25k miles per year?

The younger lower miles diesel is a no brainer IMO

I do slightly higher miles than you and have never spent anywhere near £16k on a commuter car.
With that annual mileage it's just not worth it IMO.

£5-6.5k on an older Golf and change as it approaches 100k miles.

This will be my do it all car, which will be changed in 4 years ish. So daily commute, weekends, trips, family outings etc.

I have no problem running a car into the 100+k territory and I’d certainly like to sit in something comfy / entertaining / decently specced.

Nothing wrong with older cars but I’d rather get one decent motor to do the lot than two older less refined models, adding an extra insurance / tax / fuel bill too.

Better tech and more options on the GTD as standard I think.

I went from a civic type r to a GTD and it was pure heaven for getting the miles done in comfort. But also can be a bit of fun on the country roads.

Go GTD. The drop in demand for diesel is factored in allowing you to purchase the newer, better specced car. Also, if you got a slightly older one than the example given, I think they are only £20 a year to tax.

I have the GTD of the same vintage and its been flawless over the last 25,000 miles. I bought it new and test drove the GTI but preferred the GTD for all round usability. The mpg is slowly going up and is now over 50mpg. It can also be quick when it needs to be.
My only gripe is road noise which I suspect is tyre related but as the original set are still going strong it will be while before I find out if thats true.

I had the same idea as you, but couldn’t help but think the GTD was over priced. Ended up with a seat leon 184 tdi dsg with the same engine and gear box, adaptive cruise, led headlights, pano roof etc etc for £12k with 25k on it

It has to be the diesel & I second the above the Leon is a great option.

Currently running a GTD (from 18k, currently on 60k over two years) and it's a much nicer place to be than a Leon, probably not worth the price difference but it's a better car. Struggling to think of anything (in the class or thereabouts) I'd replace it with. Am getting a bit bored though.
