Evening,

With the impending arrival of bambino number two the family wagon needs changing. Currently run a focus ST TDCI estate. I am 6ft + and when driving it there is no room behind the drivers seat, certainly not room for an isofix baby seat.

So Mrs likes the look of the x-trail, anyone got any experience with them? Won’t be a brand new car but 2015/16.

Thanking you kindly.

My brother in law has one, a 1.6 dCi N Tec on a 15 plate. They got it a year ago to replace a leggy Honda CRV. It does a fair few miles (its on about 50k now) and they've had no problems up to now. It's a nice car, but very whitegoods and soulless. It doesn't feel particularly well built either.

Unless you are desperate for 7 seats then I would get something else personally.

My dad has a 17 plate Tekna 1.6dci. It’s alright I guess just a bit boring. He says the infotainment is pretty crap compared to other cars (he drives a lot of rental cars for work).

It’s pretty good on fuel for a big car and is comfortable. The heating is good too. Obviously it’s not fast but the engine is good enough for the job.

I’ve got a 64 plate 1.6dci Tekna. It’s ok. It does the job. The engine is adequate at best, returns an average of about 45mpg, on a long cruise it’s quiet and comfortable. Around town it’s a bit of a slug.
The media interface is crap. Whether its tethered by Bluetooth or aux cable, music drops out for about 20 seconds quite often for no reason. The sat nav is pretty good to be fair. It’s got all the tech, hill start assist, auto lights and auto main beam, heated seats etc which is all very nice.
It’s comfy and spacious and does what I bought it for which was to lug the kids and all their associated kit around. They love the panoramic sunroof and seem to like being in it. The adjustable back seats are handy.

Overall it’s fine. It’s a Ronseal car - does what it’s supposed to do, no more, no less.

Just had the equivalent on holiday, and it was a decent thing but was gutless. Not sure if have different engines in USA but this was an automatic petrol and you put your foot down, it revved a lot and not much else! Apart from that I actually liked it, easy to drive etc. If I wasn’t particularly interested in cars I can see the appeal.
As has been said a ronseal car!

I may be incorrect but isn’t the xtrail a qashqai with a bigger butt for the extra seats? I wouldn’t expect that leg room would be any better than a focus if so. Unless 6’+ is 6’6”+ I can’t see how a focus estate would be more than adequate. I hate these “I have a baby I need a huge car” threads!! A focus estate is a big car!

Nissans are st too!

I think you're thinking of the Qashqai+2?

And have you ever put a modern rear facing car seat in a car?

I may stand corrected but I think it’s a different platform. Also different engines, the Qq has a 1.5 diesel and the XT has a 1.6.

The rear leg room is much bigger than a focus. The rear seats adjust backwards/forwards to either give you more leg room or a bigger boot. When in the fully back position the rear leg room seems bigger than my old XC90... it’s really pretty good!

I agree somewhat with the ‘have children, need a huge car’ theory. But it’s peoples own choice, and actually, in this instance the OP is being pretty reasonable... in the current world of huge X6’s, the new XC90 is enormous, VW Touregs et al, the X Trail is quite a modest sized car.....

Thanks for the replies, as usual lots of food for thought. That’s the weekend sorted, the dreaded trawl around the stealers!

A focus estate isn’t a big car, as boring as it is a new born car seat on an isofix base doesn’t fit behind me. Pain in the bum!

Cheers all

We had one for a couple of years. It was pretty good and managed to fit loads of stuff in for camping holidays to France. Economy is good for the size of car, it’s obviously not quick but for a 1.6 it does a very good job. I can’t imagine there is much better at the price point, the Honda is probably as good but I prefer the look of the x-trail. Being able to move the rear seats for either more leg room or boot size is a plus, something definitely missed on our XC60. if a bigger car is required it has to be worth a look at the S-Max also which always gets good reviews. Would get a similar age / mileage to the X-Trail and space would be similar also.

We traded in a 2015 Qashqai recently for a 2017 Xtrail, made a big mistake buying the Qashqai as the boot space is terrible.
At just over 6 ft I find rear legroom is very good in the Xtrail, im not a fan of the rear seats though, they are not very comfortable.
Boot space is very good, ours is a 7 seater option but we didnt specifically want that. Im guessing with the seats up luggage space is non existent.
1.6 dci engine pulls well low down right where you need it but is not very exciting.
Interior is pretty bland, dont personally have any issues with the info system.
If the missus had liked them we would have gone for an Smax or an estate of some description.

Just make sure you check whatever car is favourite with the car seat you have in mind. The wife bought a Joie Spin for our sprog which is huge. When its rear facing at a lanky 6ft 1" I don't fit very well in the front seat, and thats with a 5 series tourer!

Around a year ago the new model XTrail was coming out and there were great lease deals to be had on the old model Teknas. Our 2.5 year old CR-V was in the Honda dealers seemingly completely dead with no known reason so I was looking for options and made calls and got quotes for the XT. Honda then put us in a hire car as the repairs were taking so long and lo-and-behold it was an 1.6 XTrail Tekna.

Initially I liked it - they look good from the outside, it had loads of kit (sat nav, blind spot monitoring, 360 cameras, self-parking system) and the space front and back was slightly better than the CR-V. However after 2 weeks I was fed up with it and ended up getting a Pug 5008 to replace the Honda. Compared to the CR-V (and 5008) I found the XT slow, noisy, rattly, the interior plastics were really cheap and 'scratchy' and the infotainment system looked like it was from about 2003 - whilst it worked ok it was quite difficult to use and the graphics were Sega Mega Drive-esque.

The CR-V is still a big car, it was nicer inside, felt better built and the infotainment was miles ahead of Nissan. Even though we had a bit of a nightmare with our one I'd still have another one of them before an XT. We had a 2015 facelift CR-V EX with cream leather interior which was really nice. You could probably get one for similar money to the XTrail.

Thanks again people, nice to hear some real world stories. Hadn’t thought about a Rav-4 so will have a look at those. Hopefully get sorted soon as looking at cars takes over my life.....I mean I’m pretty addicted to autotrader anyway but this has been like a 3 month bender in Vegas! I’ll need a holiday once we’re sorted....oh wait no that’s when the baby is due!
