So my trusty Skoda has finely died and the DPF is shot.

So whilst I investigate sorting that out I am thinking of getting a couple for cars for a small budget.

Need something really economical to get to work and then something bigger for weekends and camping trips.

So first of all I am thinking a Smart car and a Volvo of some kind.

My budget 4-5K

Thoughts?

With tax and insurance, running two vehicles isn't likely to be cheaper than having one do-it-all machine.

If you're set on your plan however and want maximum cheapness, get a K11 Micra and a Fiat Doblo. Both can be bought and run very cheaply.

Other options for the small car would be a Yaris, Jazz etc.

I'd buy 1 car and sort the Skoda out .

Is it just the DPF ?

I'd just get a tidy A4 A6 avant 1.9 tdi (so pre pdf)

Half your budget and large but also frugal. A smart etc at what 60mpg tops is that really going to be worth it?

I'm a fan of two cars more, eco car and sports/weekend car, but I don't think the eco small car/and large estate combo is as viable/worth it?

Dont forget you can only have your no claims discount against 1 car. Makes insuring the 2nd car much more.

Get one car with your budget it doesn't make sense, so here's my (non DPF) suggestions.

Yep just DPF. It’s an 07 and done 230k miles wise.

So no real surprise. Also need a small amount on tyres and brakes which was going to happen until this

Thanks for the comments. Suppose it’s a reaction to the Skoda failing.

Just annoying more than anything. Might just get it taken off.

Lack of a standard-fit DPF is an MOT fail now, IIRC - perhaps you could knock the insides out and hope it doesn't smoke too much? (which is also an MOT fail rolleyes lol)

Default Volvo based shed motoring solution is a P2 V70 D5 with a manual box, ideally the 163bhp version... can be had for ~£1500.00 and hard to beat for the cash in terms of big, solid estates that seem to run on fresh air. Same rules apply though, just don't buy a buggered one or it can be expensive to put right - timing belts, suspension clunks, intercooler leaks etc etc.
