Golf R Tow Bar

After setting my mind on a Golf R, I've just had the horrible realization that it might not accommodate a Tow Bar.

Most forum posts seem to suggest it doesnt....but when I tried the configurator on the VW website, it lets me order a Golf R, WITH a "Detachable tow bar - including installation kit".

Can anyone confirm if you can have a tow bar on the R?

Just to clarify....no...I dont have a caravan.....its a trailer tent.

Just to clarify....no...I dont have a caravan.....its a trailer tent.

Yes, you can fit a tow bar.

But the R is not homologated for towing, so the only thing you can (legally) use the tow bar for is a bike rack.

To be honest it's a tiny tiny trailer with some camping gear in. My 7 year old can lift it.

Go for it, or find another car?

Only you can answer that. The fine is £300 or a court summons, I think. Insurance are likely to take a dim view if you had an accident.

The GTI is plated for towing!

For the sake of the 2 or 3 times per year the trailer would be on it, I think Ill live it.

Please remember you need to have tail lights etc so if not fitted by the factory you will have to get someone to install it properly
Personally I would not want someone to cut into wiring loom of a new car

Having towed a lot with a trailer I got pulled over for a check/weighing station a number of times which has never happened when I am trailer free

I would be ordering the tow bar fitted from factory new....definitely wouldnt get it done afterwards.

Point noted about the weigh ins though.

This came up in another thread. Seems the configurator says you can...but you can't actually order it.

You cannot do this. The option might be there on the configurator but the factory will reject it.

There is no rear diffuser for the Golf R that is suitable for towing either so expect a hole there if you were to have one fitted after delivery.

Decided to sack the tow bar and get a roof box
