Hi fella's, (and lady fella's),
On the brink of buying a 02 172 in flame red. I've seen the car, had a good poke around it and under it, went for a drive and nothing is troubling me so far. Only marks are stone chips and a small bit of bubbling on the inside of the boot lid. Neither of these things bother me. Question is are there any particular things that I need to check on this particular car, I've done all of the normal checks.

Cambelt has been done recently and clutch done at the same time. Engine out for these and cleaned thoroughly at the same time.

Car has done just shy of 120,000 miles and at the moment we have settled on me buying for a grand. I am well versed in Renaults iffy build quality as I have a modified r26 at the moment so I'm ok with a few squeaks and rattles and the occasional piece falling off! Cheers.

I presume in that colour and age the paintwork is ok? Red panels are typically more vulnerable to fade so make sure you're looking at it in good light.

Flame is a metallic so should be ok.

General stuff on these, check AC works, rust, bushes etc.

AC removed which suits me fine, one less thing to worry about. Paint looks good although I haven't seen it in good daylight. I've given it a very thorough going over by powerful headlight and no bad scratches and zero dents. Seeing it in daylight soon. I'm not too fussy about paint as it's a cheap car and my cars get used properly. Cheers guys.

I think the 172/182 engines need to have the dephaser pulley(s?) done at the same time as the cambelt, so ask the question if you've not been told.

A grand seems a good price, though, the Flame Red colour seems to be one of the rarer colours.

If you can, remove the rear interior trim panels and look down the inside of the body to the sills - I believe that they can rust quite badly there.

Good advice, thank you.

Stunning colour when polished up. I've had 13 or 14 Mk2 Clio Sports and love them.

Important things for the engine with that mileage (should of had 2-3 Cambelt changes by now) dephaser pulley, waterpump.

Any noises from the gearbox, any slop in the box or harsh movement in the gearstick when coming on and off the throttle (worn engine mounts, particularly dogbone lower gearbox mount).

Top engine mounts fail too which are £80-100 to replace.

Some of the Phase 1 (Mark 2 shape with old front end) have started to rust, apparently starting in the rear quarter, as someone helse has mentioned. Unfortunately removing the rear doorcard isnt a 2 second job to pull off without looking like an idiot infront of the current owner, so I would have a good poke around underneath it especially around the rear quarter areas.

Suspension - any clunking could be a sign of dampers, if the back end twitches when going over bumps mid corner then 9/10 its worn rear dampers.

Other than that, I may of missed stuff but just usual checks for crash damage, oil leaks etc.

I hope you enjoy it, they're a proper bargain and totally undervalued.
