Hi all,

wife wrote off her C-Max earlier in the week. She is fine thankfully!

Anyway, we are now looking for a new (used around 2016+) car for her and the 3 kids. Short trips mainly with longer motorway run once a month so will be going petrol.

She is keen on a crossover/SUV so I am trying to keep the search narrow. Have identified the KIA Sportage, Honda CRV or Hyundai Tuscon. Budget is about £16k.

Going to look at a Tuscon on Saturday morning. Looking to get something sorted asap as she is running round in a hire car at the minute.

So - do you have any words of wisdom on either of those 3 cars?

I haven't driven a CRV but the Sportages are really nice. Leaps and bounds above the Tucson.
Considering how close the two companies are Kias are always nicer to drive than the Hyundai.

Haven't driven either. We did hire an i30 on a recent trip to Legoland which was fine. I'll be interested to see how they compare.

I thought the interior on the Sportage looked a bit basic? Also think the front end on the new shape looks a bit...challenging.

CRV. Preferably the model just before the engines were scaled back in cc's

Worth considering the Mazda CX5 too. I'd personally pick one over your three options. £16k would get you a 2.2D Sport Nav AWD.

The CR-V is a good shout - we had the newer 2015-on model in EX trim and it had everything you'd ever need in terms of kit. Not sure you'd get one in petrol in your budget though.

I'd be trying to find a minimum '3' or GT-Line spec Sportage as you get loads of kit as standard.

The Tucson is more or less the same car but Hyundai seem to be trying to brand themselves as the more upmarket of the two so prices seem a little higher. I'd want a Sport spec minimum as I hate the alloys on the lower specs. Maybe consider the ix35 and pocket a few grand?

Someone will probably say Rav4 at some point.

Just completed a near identical search and i'll be picking up a CX5 at the weekend all being well. Worth mentioning all approved used Mazdas have a 12 month warranty, regardless of age.

Tucson wasn't quite big enough in the rear for our needs, didn't look at a Sportage though.

Drove a high spec 62 plate CRV petrol auto and... hated it. I'm not that used to autos, but there was no way I would have bought it.

Also look at X-trails... with their odd choice of seat fabrics.

You could get a nearly new Ateca, albeit base spec, for around £16k also.

I'd say take a look at the Kuga in Titanium X Sport trim (but they are hard to find) they're great cars & would just be a step ahead of the Tuscon/Sportage & well ahead of the CRV imo.

Kia Sportage in Axis/White/Black Edition trim the only thing with these (& that includes the Tucson as they're the same car underneath) is that the isn't the strongest & isn't best suited to motorway work.

The CRV is better engine wise but the other three are better interior wise.

Another worthy option would be the CX-5 in Sport Nav/SE-L Nav trim:

Personally I'd try to hunt down a TXS Kuga.

If it has to be the three from your list then it would be the Kia because it has the longest warranty.

Why not PCH for two years?
Had Sportage for previous two years £190, wife's now getting Kadjar £210 per month?

There are CRV's in budget with petrol engines but they would be 2015 year and circa 25-30k miles. I've heard mixed reviews about the petrol engines so I'm now discounting them.

Yes I was doing a bit of research - I didn't realise the Sportage and Tuscon shared the same chassis. When it comes down to it the greater warranty may win out!

Looked at IX35’s – like the look of them – didn’t realise the Tuscon had replaced them

Yes looked at the Ateca – have been a passenger in a colleagues’ one but just didn’t fancy it for some reason. Thanks for the feedback on the CRV – seems you weren’t the only one!

Of all of my wife’s quirks one is that she will absolutely not consider finance! On anything – cars or otherwise. Although my car is on finance…

Very helpful indeed! Yes I did look at the Kuga but here in NI there seemed to be few about and those were seemingly all diesel. Most people in NI are die-hard diesel users.

CX-5 is a good shout I will try to arrange a viewing.

Going to look at this in the morning:

https://www.charleshurstgroup.co.uk/kia/used-cars/...

And then will swing past the Hyundai garage to look at the Tuscon.

I have a feeling that age/mileage/warranty might win out over spec, as in the case above – 2k miles 2018, 7 years warranty. My wife is a fairly simple creature (she refuses to drive my car because of the electronic parking brake for example) so too many lights and gizmos might be actually be unhelpful.
