For less than £20k, does a family friendly car that isn’t a typical MPV or hatch back exist?

One that would fit a push chair in the boot, 2 child’s seats in the back and does 0-60 in less than 7 seconds.

Something that you wouldn’t mind driving to the south of France or down to Italy in.

Maybe I’m in denial...

Another vote for fast-ish estate.

Octavia vrs? diesel hits 60 in 7.5, petrol 6.5. Year old one will be somewhere near 20k

Yup lots.
Les if you want a petrol, unfortunately.

I dread to think what our E-Class is worth now, but it’s a hell of a lot less than the budget mentioned, and has been a very good family car.

I would have thought that for a 20k "cash" budget, the world would pretty much be your oyster. E90 M3. B7 RS4 Saloon/Avant, C63 AMG saloon/estate, a lightly used (C-segment?) hot hatch i.e. Golf GTI/R, Focus ST, M135i/M140i etc. All would be practical and a blast to drive.

If it has to be new, then that limits your choices somewhat. I haven't looked in a new Fiesta but it's supposedly bigger and a new Fiesta ST 5 door would fulfill your fun and performance criteria. Maybe you might get a cracking deal on an old-shape Focus ST Estate if they still have any left?

If it's not a "cash" budget then there are plenty of "cheap", short-term lease deals around. My friend just ordered a new Volvo V60 T5 for around 250 per month and had a SEAT Leon ST Cupra for a similar budget before that. So unless you're after something very exotic, there are plenty of options.

Definitely this. If you're looking for something a little larger, for example, a CLS55 is available for around the £12k mark (I bought one and have two kids and a pushchair to ferry around). Roofline is quite low but other than that it's great. For more like £15k you can pick up a CLS63. AMG variant E-Classes are a little more, but still sub-£20k I think. On the SUV side, there's tons of full fat Range Rovers (petrol and diesel) available in your budget (and lower) as well.
