Toyota Yaris 1999-2005, which engine?
Discussion
After a bit of advice...
Looking to get a Toyota Yaris with under 100k miles on it. I was wondering if anyone has owned one and what they thought of the general reliability of it.
There’s the 1.0, 1.3 or 1.4L diesel available - I think it is going to be between the 1.0 or 1.3 for me.
Is the 1.0L a reliable engine? Seen on a reviewing website to stay away from that engine and opt for the 1.3 instead.
What’s people’s opinions on these cars and engines?

My Mrs had a 2005 1.0 about 3 Years ago
Very capable but a bit gutless and I didn't particularly like driving it.
Nothing went wrong with it. Only Service Items replaced.
Now has a 2003 1.3 Auto
The 1.3 is a much nicer Engine and I love driving it.
Again nothing outside of regular Service Items.
I think the 2003 on Facelift are a bit better than the Original.
Nothing wrong with the 1.0 just a bit under powered.

I have a 2002 1.0 bought in Jan this year. Wanted the 1.3 but prioritised by fails/faults on mot checker and this one was hard to ignore for the money.
I would go 1.3 if you can find an ok example.
Things I didn't know at the time but worth knowing
- buy one built in Japan not France. Some of the parts/electrics are different and a real pain to get hold of if the French model (mine is French built.
- check the heating works - it commonly fails on the Yaris/corolla of this era. Mine didn't work so I had to do a hose pipe flush. The matrix is difficult/a pain to replace if broken.
- Check the radio picks up all stations. The tuner is known to fail (mine has). You can easily fit a single din aftermarket unit though.
Mine passed its MOT last week. So hopefully I get a second year out of this £500 car.

My wife had a 2001 Yaris 1.0 before getting the Swift.
I bought it for her from the auction for £1,000. A new battery, oil sump gasket (I'm pedantic and it very easy to do) and downpipe due to slight leak (I'm pedantic remember) also very easy. That's it in eight years of local cold engine driving. Great little car and passed the mot every time.
It was the last year before they moved production from Japan to France.
