Hi folks

I’ve had my daily driver Accord Tourer for 5 years now and although it’s still faultlessly reliable I’m getting a touch itchy and thinking of moving it on.

A friend has an 06 plated WK Grand Cherokee that he’s owned for a couple of years. It’s the Merc 3.0 diesel lump and just ticked over 100k miles. This friend is a big petrol head and a self spannering type. He looks after his cars very well and they get everything they need as soon as they need it. It’s got a clean MoT record with minor advisories that never reappear.

My wife has decided to stay in a same-sized car and as we have 2 kids and associated st a bigger car would be nice. I cover about 15k a year and he Accord is a 2.4 so clearly fuel costs don’t matter much to me!

I don’t really need the extra space and the towing I do is occasional and within the limits of my Accord. I’m sure it would be useful in winter but not all that bothered as mine has winters.

But normally I spend forever looking for cars with good history and in top condition and this one has sort of fallen into my lap. It’s being offered at the price he would get for it from WBAC plus a beer.

So, what’s the consensus on them? Are they generally reliable? Good for big miles? The engine and auto box obviously common to many Merc cars and have a decent rep. What about the rest of the truck?

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

They love them in the US and frequently cover huge miles out there.

I’ve had a couple as rentals many years ago and they were ok, nothing to write home about and I imagine you’ll get annoyed with interior quality and fit compared to the accord

My dad had the 5.7 Hemi version: it was totally faultless and consumables were extremely cheap too. Interior is very plasticky and ugly but well specified and comfortable. I'd happily have one tbh.

I have to admit I’ve got used to not having rattly trim! That said, what for the same money has good fit/ quality? Discovery will just be a constant maintenance circle and won’t be fitted out anything like a jap estate.

The Japanese 4x4 options just seem pricier than the value I’d be getting in the wk
