Advice for purchase tomorrow

Hi all tomorrow I'm travelling to Birmingham to look at a car I'm potentially buying for a grand. I'm going on the train on my own as I got no one to come with me. The seller who is selling the car privately has offered to pick me up from the train station and take me to his place to look at the car. I weren't bothered about it before but since talking to my dad about it I now don't feel so sure as he said and I quote ''your nuts going there with all that money by yourself to meet someone you don't know''. He's had me thinking ever since. Anyone got any advice, safest way to pay, how to get a receipt etc I've never done this before so don't quite know what to expect.
FLOL, for all we know the OP lives in West Brom and is taking a 15 minute train ride to pick up a car from a 75 year old retired gent who still has the original bill of sale and all the tax discs for his 1997 Rover.
Birmingham’s just a city like any other. Nice bits, um.... “not so nice” bits. Have your wits about you and it’s fine.
OP if you’re at all concerned don’t carry the cash with you, either withdraw it once you’ve seen the car or pay by bank transfer.

Why not just ask him to meet you at (or near) the station with the car? Better to go for a bank transfer than cash....safer, anyway.I think you have to make a call, but to be truly safe I guess you don't travel with the cash in your pocket and take a friend with you. I went by myself to the far east of Essex to scratch a V8 itch and collect a Jaguar XJ8 I'd bought sight unseen on eBay for just over £1000, taking the cash with me.
The owner picked me up from the station in the Jag and back to his house to pay and do the documentation thing. I didn't get mugged for my cash (though my wife would disagree), the car was pretty much as described and as I expected, though I guess if it had been a total mess I would have just asked to be taken back to the station or call a cab.
I was working in London so I was already over half way there, I caught a train from Liverpool St and then drove back home up the A13 and round the M25. That gave me a good chance to check out what I'd bought.
The seller was an old feller, he certainly wasn't too straight with me with the service history but I felt in the comms leading up to the sale I wasn't about to be held up for ransom for my cash.
Perhaps I should have, as I could have avoided the expensive trouble I had later with the gearbox and the permanent earache I still get to this day (even though I sold it on nearly 2 years ago) from my wife.
