More hypothetical than actual buying advice so apologies if in the wrong section.

Do people consider 'diesel' and 'driver's car' separate and mutually exclusive?

New temporary commute takes me down some cracking B-roads which are mostly filled with farmers/caravanners(?) but on the odd occasion they're quiet, are a brilliant drive. Got me thinking if their are any real contenders for long boring commutes that can then provide a reasonably good steer when desired.

Thoughts and suggestions if you will.

Most modern cars are a decent steer these days depending on you budget the two that standout for me are the Megane RS dci
& the ST-d Focus.

The Mégane RS is so left-field I love it. Annoyingly there's one near me too cheap not to have a look at. Thanks for creating this problem getmecoat

Certainly not. Although there is often a lack of driver focused diesels. Such as no diesel MX-5, which I still think could have been pretty interesting.

No doubting diesels can be quick but a lot of people (myself included) don't much like the characteristics of diesel engines. (generalisation I know before someone points that out. smile ) They sound a bit pony too.

At the end of the day, 4 wheels and an engine makes a car, shouldn't matter what type of fuel it runs on. MX-5 chassis should balance out the increase in weight from a diesel lump.

I’ve never understood why people think or claim they sound pants. 4 pot petrols as a rule sound horrifically terrible or boring. The 4 pot diesels aren’t musical, but usually have a bit more personality about them.

Same is true with how they drive. And I’ll be honest one of my most enjoyable engines to drive and rag is a Diesel engine. Ok it isn’t stock, but when you look at my other cars and past cars it has to say something.

I think it's all personal preference and what you're used to. Having access to a variety of engine types is the key to avoiding become bored with any given layout IMO.

I agree that it is personal preference, I've never had an issue with a 4 cylinder petrol in terms of noise or smoothness. Yet I can't stand the noise that a 4 cylinder diesel engine makes, and I also question its smoothness.

I've had quite a few cars with 4 cylinder petrol engines, and most sounded pretty poor! The exceptions being my 2 Fiats with Lampredi twin-cam engines and my MK2 Escort RS2000.

But more recently I had a BMW 123d so a 4 cylinder diesel - it didn't sound great, but was very refined, smooth and reasonably quick.

Then again I've moved on to N/A straight 6 petrol engines now, and hopefully will never have to go back to any 4 cylinder whatever fuel it uses!

If I wanted a dynamic diesel I'd go for a manual 330d, but if auto is OK then a 335d would work.
