New Used Car Thoughts? 50k Budget

Hello Everyone!

Just to get it out of the way so we can focus on cars here as we are all petrolheads,
I am 23 years old and I'm wanting to have a discussion of a potential new car for around 50k.
I don't want any comments about my age or (daddy's money or whatever)


You guys are the best to ask about this,
What are your guy's thoughts as I don't know if I should go sports car or more of a 4x4 route as its almost winter?

I change my cars quite a lot so it would just be for the next few months.

If you could help with some suggestions that would be fantastic.

I love the thought of having a 4x4 supercar but out of warranty, those cars can be nightmares.


would it be wise to go the boring route of a range rover for the winter?
or a car that can do both but isn't great at either like the X5M?

What about a 66 plate RS6 Avant? Performance, warranty cover for time needed and interior space?

Does anyone have any experience with 4.7 vantages or MC Granturismo's? I have no real favouritism to any car I just want something cool.

I've flipped and flopped on buying a RS6 performance edition over the last couple of weeks, regardless what current owners think prices are only going one way (albeit more slowly compared to other M's & AMG's etc) and there is a huge amount of pricing variance in the market. They appear to be very sensitive to colour, mileage and spec, I've seen a couple of low spec Sepang cars sell within 24 hours at main dealers yet some higher specced, lower priced cars in Misano or Daytona have hung around like a bad smell for weeks / months, for example I looked at this car at the beginning of August when it was up for £59k at Nottingham Audi;

I've run plenty of money pits in the past and while I don't think the RS6 has many weak spots mechanically that can throw up big bills, expectations for running costs should be in-line with a £100k car for insurance, tyres, brakes etc. They are also deceptively massive, which is one of the reasons why I've not taken the plunge yet.

Depends on what you will use it for. If 23 year old me was spending £50k on a car I would probably would of got a R8 or a V6 Exige.

I was interested in a nardo grey, to be honest!

It's just for the winter so maybe an RS6 won't spit up too many faults or cost too much in tires.

but I am thinking,
Maybe a sports car now as it will be cheaper to buy in winter?

Fellow pistonheaders, what is the world coming to? How can it be over 12 hours before someone has pointed out the entertainment value of suggesting a Range Rover to avoid reliability issues?

OP I'd suggest that you start from "What do I want from the car" then move onto how much you need to spend to get what you want rather than start with "I've got £50k how can I pi55 it up the wall fastest".

I'd suggest that anything from a Bentley Continental GT to a Audi A/RS 5 to a BMW 3/4 series with AWD could be had for way under your budget, so why bother spending more?

At 23 you should consider the Insurance costs.

IMO Insurance will be a bigger expense than maintenance or depreciation on anything suggested here so far.

With the age thing in mind, how about something like this:-

Can be had for £35k, looks the part, shouldn't cost much to maintain, shouldn't depreciate much, should be reasonable to insure (compared to say an R8 V10 or GTR).

For a car that's only going to be kept for a few months - which will be over winter - I don't think I'd want anything RWD and sporty.

But then, I'm not 23.

I am in the fortunate position that due to a family business Insurance isn't an issue.

My thoughts are, decide which cars you like, go have a look at/test drive them and then make a decision based upon what you like the best.

It's a time honoured way of buying cars and seems to work quite well.

I was a 26 when I had my R8 (albeit briefly) and would strongly recommend this route - just make sure that it’s got a VERY good history

I'd be going for a late defender for the winter personally, won't lose much on it either when you do come to sell it, given how the new one's looking

Unless you buy privately you'll take a bath on whatever you buy, I bought a V8V at £42k, dealer part ex was around £35k (when I asked out of interest).

Do not underestimate the cost of running these cars, mine went in for a service and it was a £3k bill just for some small bits and bobs, soon adds up.

But if you are going for it ... I'd be looking at a Bentley CGT SuperSports (4WD), 600hp, it is what I fancy next, just check, check and check again on the brakes as they are CC and the replacement costs are eye watering, may be common across other VAG cars (RS6 I think they were shared with).
