Hi guys,

I was posting months ago about getting an A3 or a sensible car. However, being almost 21, I've decided to wait til then so I can get insured on an M140i - no point in driving slow cars eh.

However, speccing it is proving difficult. I'm pretty settled on black sapphire paint but unsure whether to get the orbit grey "M140i" wheels or whether to get the gloss black ones that can also be found on any 1er shadow edition - 118i etc.

Also, is pro nav worth the extra 20 odd quid a month? I had the standard nav in my 116d and it did the job but unsure if pro nav is worth the extra/brings any useful features.

What does everybody think?

I would check out Joe Achilles on youtube. He's answered just about every imaginable question on the baby M's.

Is Pro nav worth it over business nav? Yes

Is it worth paying 20 quid a month for? That’s up to you really. I think the screen is much better than the business nav and you get the better idrive controller.

20 quid a month over 3 years is 720 which is about what it costs as an extra.

Cheers guys.

£20 odd a month sounds ludicrous but I'm getting the car on a 24 month PCP with 5k mpa (cheaper to pay excess mileage than take 10k) for 275 a month with a 1k deposit. £32 a month for extra 5k miles a year bringing it to £307 a month so pro nav would bring it to just £330 a month which seems outstanding to me.

Still trying to pick these wheels though, decisions...

Owning a M135i with Pro Nav, it's great... but would I pay £20 a month for it over the standard? No. I'd sooner spec adaptive suspension and Harmon Kardon (of which I have both). Much more important IMO - don't know how much they are per month though!

Be wary of the black paint... Show marks, chips etc very heavily and also swirl marks. Look great when detailed or fresh out of the factory but pain to keep that way

I had a 4 series with standard now have a 5 with pro.
Standard sat nav does the job fine . It better than top satnavs from 5 years ago.

The only options worth paying extra for on a lease or pcp are....
More cylinders
Better stereo
Colour and Metalic paint

Also double double check your mileage calculations and for an extra £150 or so get Gap insurance.

Other than that go for it! At 21 i purchased a e36 coupe and loved every second.

At 5K a year ( or even 10 now I've re-read it - do you need Pro Nav?
Will you be going anywhere you don't know?

Not to doubt you bud but bare in mind the costs of running a M140i over a normal car will be a massive jump in your costs, fuel, insurance, servicing etc. I’ve watched a lot of young guys get financially sunk trying to run cars like these over the past few years. Unless money is no concern I’d suggest it’s worth getting in something that maybe dynamically far superior and costs a lot less to run.

Is the pro nav worth 720 over 3 years? Absolutely not! Especially when the car isn’t yours at the end of the period. I’ve experienced both and the standard nav does everything fine. I’d encourage you to keep the money in your pocket and use it for something that is actually useful.

Anyway if you do decide to go ahead, enjoy, I own one and it’s a pretty good car. I love the big engine/small car dynamics and the auto box (sorry!) however as a drivers car it’s far from perfect and feels quite unsettled when pushing on but personally I quite enjoy the fact it can be a handful in that way.

Still has value to the lessor at the end of the lease period in terms of resale, though - but them's the breaks, I guess!

Thanks again everybody, some good points!

I'm fortunate to be in a very good position to afford the car and have budgeted the usual expenses in. Insurance starting when I turn 21 is coming in at just over £1100 for the year. For owners of the M140i, does £40 a week in fuel seem reasonable for about 120-150 miles of 70% streets 30% motorway driving? I'm also assuming that it may only need one service in the 2yrs of driving I'll have it.

With regards to pro nav, I think I will spec it given I am a bit of a techie and had a 116d with business media which I found boring after a while. Also overall monthly cost is coming in affordable.

For those asking where I'm getting the deal from, it is through a work car scheme but for personal cars. They provide low rate finance on PCP and a significant reduction in the car price from dealer.

Did you go for this? I'm turning 21 in February and was considering placing an order for one of the last m140i' before the production run stops.

My deal was a long way off yours though:

4.5k deposit
400 PM
10k annual mileage
3 years

Optional final payment is 13k.

Spec was Sapphire black shadow edition, sunroof, 3 door, pro nav.

Can't see the car being worth 13k at the end considering m135i haven't sunk that low yet, so there should be a good few grand equity at the end of the 3 years.

You would need to be certifiably mental to go with that 'deal'.

A new one is £36k isn't it? That deal is £31900 total if he were to buy it at the end.

Doesn't sound too bad to me.

I've owned an M235i for a few months now, I opted for HP as it was an Approved Used car. Stuck 80% deposit down and financing the remaining 20% of the car via BMW Finance and I must say the jump in running costs from my 1.8TSI Ibiza Cupra are massive, as expected, but just be prepared...

I've had the car for 4 months now and covered 6,000 miles (not commuting, just days out etc) and averaged 25mpg so that's £1.4k in itself, not to mention rear tyres, you'll go through 2 sets of rears at ~£300 fitted during your 2 years and a service. Not ridiculous money, you're avoiding plenty of costs with it being brand new but still... I've spent and continuing to spend a fair bit on all of the M Performance bits, something you'll probably avoid again. So, basically, be prepared to spend money on petrol/tyres and you'll be fine hehe

Worth mentioning that I went out of my way to get a good spec, including pro nav, heated seats, adaptive suspension and adaptive headlights - All of which are a must IMO.

I've ran an M135i for 2 1/2 years now and have the standard nav and it's perfectly fine. Screen is easy to read and you still get the instructions on the dashboard for exits, etc. I was told the pro nav was a must but I've only used sat nav about 7 or 8 times since I've had the car. Any work travel is done in a pool car or hire car and we use the family bus for personal long trips. The pro nav is certainly better and has a nicer large screen but I'd definitely not spec it for an extra £20 a month even if I did need to use it more regularly. The standard is fine. As others have said, I'd be looking at other options ahead of the nav. HK isn't great but definitely better than the standard kit and people swear by the adaptive suspension.

Whats the going rate then? I specced the same car on Carwow this morning and some dealers are doing a 20% discount - that seem about right?
