Jaguar XJR (X300) Temptation
Discussion
I've been sneaking looks at this ad repeatedly over the last few days. Has anyone had experience owning one of these? Am I guaranteed to ruin myself financially? Is it ridiculously overpriced? It does look as close to perfect as you're likely to get for a 21 year old car.

1) the folder “car buying “ is your friend when asking about, err, car buying.
2) the 1-5k smoker barge thread is your friend with these.
3) unless you’re tucking it up under a sheepskin blanket, expecting another mug but it from at twice the price next week, buy one for 2-3k and enjoy it.

A few pointers this way: https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/...

Depends what you want to do with it, really. Mileage isn't an issue with these; I'd be more inclined to spend half of that on a really smart UK example and enjoy it for a while then sell it on.
Personally, I got bored of mine pretty quickly; it's a big, heavy and poorly packaged saloon at the end of the day – but it is a pleasant thing to cruise around in for a while.
Great engine, too, if everything's working as it should – and, a few common foibles aside, I've always found X300s to be pretty reliable.

It certainly looks good in the photos. Do the Japanese market cars have a different bootlid number plate section, or is it simply a square plate in the standard shaped bootlid?
It's strong money, in my opinion, and whilst 320bhp was worthy of note in 1995, perhaps not so much now; I suppose it depends how much you want a S6 XJR. The same money would buy a good condition aluminium XJ from 2003 onwards, but as with all these purchases, it's purely a personal choice.
Generally, they're fairly reliable with the usual caveats re heavy cars and brakes/suspension bushes etc..

I can see it will one day be worth £10k as a show queen.
So if you're keeping it forever and doing 800 miles a year, then I can see the argument that if it'll be worth £10k in 2028, you might as well pay that for it now, if the enjoyment of owning it is worth it to you.
On the other hand, if you're going to actually use it, you might be better off spending £4-5k on a nice one.

That has to be the cleanest second hand example for sale.
GET IT BOUGHT!
He's right - do not hesitate. I had a '99 V8 which got nicknamed The Butler with a Flick Knife. It's all very comfy wedding car till you step on the moosh button and rattle through the postcodes. Comfiest car I've ever driven. Beware about flicking it into corners though and try to resist temptation to rob a jewellers.GET IT BOUGHT!
And check for rust in the pressed-plate chassis, that was what doomed my one...
For just about the same money you could get an X350 with the 4.2 V8 supercharged and aluminium body. The 4.0 had plastic timing chain tensioners which were liable to fall to bits at any time. The engine also had nickisil bore liners and many were changed under warranty. A green tag on the engine indicates whether this has been done.
The X350 is noticeably quicker and more nimble around corners weighing 200kg less than the earlier model.
Anyway, if you do go for the X300, have those tensioners checked, they may have been upgraded to the later metal ones.

Wrong engine, you’re thinking of X308.The X350 is noticeably quicker and more nimble around corners weighing 200kg less than the earlier model.
