Hi All,

Looking for a replacement for my MK7 Golf R.
It’s a a great car but I use the train for work and only drive for shopping trips, or pleasure so fancy a hot hatch that’s a bit more usable in the real world.

I’d found this car but it’s sold
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

What sort of price should I be looking for? If anyone has one for sale and is in Essex or any pointers I’d much appreciate it. I have the Golf until End of February 2019. So have time to shop. I know the Trophy is the special one but quite fancy a the creature comforts of a 182 with both cup packs

I was in almost the same boat as yourself a few weeks back and I'm also in Essex. I took the plunge and went for a Clio 182 on a 2005 plate [Black Gold] about a few weeks ago. The car I bought was clean, standard age related wear and tear, however the dephaser needed doing so a bit of work required. Just make sure all service history is there and all belts, water pump etc have been done! I don't know a massive amount about them, but have learnt a bit more recently. Happy to talk or answer any questions. I paid just under 3k.

I’m not sure if you have ever driven one but as much fun as they are they are a harsh car to live with.
We have a 2003 172 in the family and although I do like driving it I’m not dissapointed when I give it back.
Will be a big change from a vag product to a Renault!

There's a reason why I'm now on my third smile You can't beat them for value for money. You can get a ropey 172 for around a grand or can pay up to £4/5K top money for a mint original low mileage 172/182. Having had a Trophy, 172 Cup and now a 182 Cup I can tell you the Trophy isn't worth the extra (in my opinion obviously). Unless you want the halo product of course but if anything my 172 was more entertaining to drive.

As meer84 has said if the belts have been done recently, check the dephaser was done as the same time as otherwise you could end up paying to do the whole belt job again. Depending on where you go, it's a £500-800 job so a considerable chunk of cash compared to what they cost to buy.

Stunning little cars, amazing bang for your buck, especially considering the handling.

As per the general consensus they're pretty low maintenance bar the cambelt / dephaser pulley which you need a specialist for really. It's the curse of the F4R engine which carried on until the Mégane 275.

Had three of them in the past, I'd advise getting a 182 with both cup packs if you can, just because they look the best IMO.

If you can get one with Recaros it's a massive win, but you end up with the bench rear seats from the cup that looks a bit poverty. I ended up swapping mine with the half leather bench from a scrapped 182.

I have a very nice 172 cup that will be around 3.5k when I put it on sale, unfortunately I'm a long way away from Essex.

Thank you for the replies. Some good advice there and may have found a potential car. Leaning towards a 182 as a daily.

I know it won’t be like a VAG. I had a MK7 ST before and that was more usable more of the time, so hoping the Clio matches this. If I was driving to work I’d probably keep in the Golf something similar

I was struggling when I first looked into these cars how to recognise the cup packs and was thinking I’d be looking for a standard car with both cup packs. The spoiler, rear light and wheels been the initial signs.

Although the cup 182 has aircon and abs which Id like for a daily. Climate isn’t as essential but over the recent years I’ve just left it on a nice natural temperature.

Birdster,

I daily a Clio 182 (piccy in my profile). It's got both cup packs, is lowered on CookSport Springs and my commute takes me 13 miles over A and B roads to work. It's no VAG in terms of build quality and is quite raw for everyday use but I love it! It's great fun to drive, with playful handling, great turn in and crucially it always feels like you're going faster than you are. It even returns ~35mpg! If that sounds like something you can live with, then you'll not regret it.

Gear box 'dog bone' mount dies, and gives a pretty horrendous knocking noise when driving. Easy to replace with Powerflex inserts.

Engine mounts are weak and perish. Again, easy to replace.

Exhaust mount at rear is usually toast, and causes the backbox to drop and bang on the rear axle.

Belts and Dephaser is a must, or car must be priced accordingly. Many come up for sale when they're due a belt change, as people can't be bothered to spend £500 to sort it.

Headlights craze and go 'misty' - you can sort this with a kit to sand and polish them.

Interior is pretty poor. Steering wheels melt and go sticky. you can buy re-trimmed ones, but they're expensive.

Rear brakes are crap, don't really work and therefore the discs go rusty and can fail an MOT.

Most suspension and brake parts are cheap to buy and still plenty around.

172 Cup would be the one to look out for. I really think a mint low mileage one will appreciate in time.

All valid points, although a local garage (renault specialist) wanted £820 to do belts and dephaser. I have purchased the parts and found a knowledgeable local to do it all in for £580.

I will also agree with AndrewGP, I daily mine (when it's not broken) and I love driving it!

I went from a Mk7 Golf R Estate to a Clio 172. Was £1200 plus £950 for Dephaser etc, Front discs and DS1.11 Pads. It runs fine, it works fine. I miss the R a little, but it's so cheap for the performance, I don't really care.
Had a 182FF in Inferno Orange 5 years ago and regretted selling it constantly.

I’ve got an unused 2003 172 Cup with about 32,000 on the clock. Dephaser, water pump etc done about 100 miles ago. Was my dad’s but he is no longer with us. It’s a bit ropey in places - I did start a thread a while ago about it but I’m still not sure what to do with it.

What he said. I daily 120 miles in mine – I don't get much of a chance to have fun but for the few miles I do, it's totally worth it. Cruise control and 39mpg average – what's not to love? Only downside is the clutch is stiff (they're all like that sir). Ideal for sitting in traffic on the M25...

Picked up a cheap 172 cup afew weeks ago, after only having turbo’d toys it’s great fun giving it a kicking to get the power out of it and not ending up at licence losing speeds.

I know it might not have the pace off the R for those times there’s an opportunity, but when I’m around A/B roads in Essex I think it’ll be the car that makes the most sense. How do you find the performance difference?

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the replies. Makes me hungry for a change now. Rather than losing the Golf. I’m experiencing another car. My MK1 MX-5 is my favourite, just need another car to go with it. smile

Whether it’s car related or something else, we have some great members/knowledge on here.

Performance difference is obviously quite big, but I can throw the Clio around more, I care for it less. I drive it far less than the R, but I don't need to drive loads anymore!
I've made a few overtakes that were a little closer than I would have thought, as the R was DSG, and just so much quicker!

There's a Clio 182 on SOTW this week, might be worth a look?

0-60 is a big difference, but in the real world, no issues. Top speed - I have no need to go that quick in this country! Fuel economy is about the same for my commute, and can be better on a longer run. Noise - It's not bad, and it like to rev as I'm sure you know.

This is probably gonna open a large can of worms, but...

Seriously, what makes a 172 / 182 more useable on the road from a performance perspective?

Wringing out a Clio 1*2 on the road is still going to see you inextricably into licence losing territory - or worse.

IMO, you're kidding yourself if you think a 1*2 is realistically gonna be THAT more usable on the road as opposed to the Golf.

Thanks for that, kind of what I expected and sounds like you’re enjoying the car. I’ll check out SOTW. I take it you don’t miss the extra ‘refinement’. I’m quite happy in the MX-5 as well but wouldn’t fancy that for a whole day in the car.

Perhaps it’s my poor choice of words. The Golf is very easy to just point and bury the throttle, as a car to commute in and then use on the back roads home it’s great.

I want something the other way round as I don’t need to commute and something that’s a little bit more raw, okay not Caterham raw but hopefully you get my point, something a little more enjoyable at lower speeds. The Golf hides its speeds well etc. You might be right and I find it’s not what I’m looking for. I am also thinking Panda 100/Up GTI type cars as an alternative.
