Hello,

Forgive me if this has already been covered/is a dumb question but I was after some insight.

I've always bought used cars and normally used emails/calls to get to a good deal but now, along with a "silly" car I need a family car too.

I'd like to get a new or nearly new car and I'm having some difficulty. A lot of my friends/colleagues have bought brand new cars from dealerships on a PCP scheme, often getting quite silly monthlies or finding offers where Deposit = Monthlies e.g. 350 down 350pm etc. I've been trying to get similar deals but it seems dealerships are hesitant to give decent prices over phone/email.

Is it a given that physically going into the dealership will net you a better deal? I have never bought a new car so I really don't know what the best way is to get into a new vehicle.

For reference; Im looking at a BMW 3/4 Series - All these dealerships advertise deals like £329 down £329pm, but then when I email/call they come back with something like £5k down £440pm.

TL'DR; Whats the best way to get a new car on PCP, should I go to the dealership? How do I negotiate/walk away with a good deal.

Thanks

Walking into a dealership is in most cases, going to get you a duff deal. They make their money out of people who haven't done their homework which allows the rest of us to get better deals via other means.

Check out all the useful sites, drive the deal, car wow, broadspeed, orangewheels etc and plug in your requirements - or give them a call with a price you want to pay and see where you get. Your best bet is to take a PCP where a manufacturer is offering a large incentive - i.e. deposit contribution from their side.

All the cars will still come through a main dealer and it's a totally hassle free process. I've bought two this way and saved a fortune vs going into a dealer. In fact my local dealer (who I gave the chance to price match on both deals) couldn't get close on either.

Basically, do it online, really do some homework to make sure whatever you go for is at the best price.

I much prefer doing it online, but I dont know if its just a bmw thing but the dealers are really hesitant to give me any decent offers online. The PCP figures always come back at some outlandish price that's way off the advertised "deal" - Then I usually get the "Ah you have to come down so we can give you the full quote" despite the dealership being 200 miles away.

I must be doing something wrong

Right now, I'd wait and keep your wallet shut.

buyer's market, especially after today's political turmoil, unlikely to stimulate sales any time soon so deals inevitably going to get better

Most of it is available online

You can see the manufacturer's offers on their websites, looking something like this:
https://offers.bmw.co.uk/finance-offers/result/?of...

Or independent leasing companies like this
https://www.nationwidevehiclecontracts.co.uk/car-l...

The 2 examples above are for almost identical cars on slightly different finance packeages.. There are pros and cons to each individual finance method.

Now that you have some idea of what the market prices are go and have a coffee with a salesperson at your preferred local car shop (dealer). If they can beat those online quotes and they treat you nicely then sign up. If they can't / don't then order with teh best online deal you can find.

Use a broker such as carfile or drivethedeal. They'll get you a very reasonable price without any of the leg work and all over the phone/internet.
