Which Range Rover - Towing, Least Unreliable, Sub £8k
Discussion
I know better, I know I'll regret it but it's the only car that fulfills my criteria
I regularly tow 2.5 tons and occasionally up to 3.5, I'd like a nice car but I'd rarely drive one so to combine it with the tow car seems obvious
I have looked at the X5, Q7, Jeep and Discovery and they just don't do it for me
So which Range Rover is likely to be the best option FF or Sport, Petrol (I'd LPG it) or diesel ?

Id rather have a petrol land cruiser over a RR. the v8 they stuck in the RR was a good lump (american small block i believe??) but its everything else that fubars on them. so, landcruisemore cash but ultimately less issues. i know the very early ones could tow 3.5t as could the 2008-ish models but appreciate they will probably still be pricey.
If you can find an L322 with the Jaguar N/A V8 then that's the one to have. These are identified by facelifted front lights that coincided with the launched of the S/C V8, they were available for sale from 2005-2007 over here but most buyers either went S/C or later on, for the TDV8 diesel.
The BMW V8 petrol is good, but the Jaguar unit seems more reliable from what I've read. The Discovery 3 was offered with the same engine, and those that come up for sale usually have very high mileages (200k+).
I'd personally avoid the Td6 diesel, there are many out there that have been neglected though £8k would net a good example. Without a remap it will feel a little underpowered when towing towards the weight limit, remaps are plentiful but lots of towing will likely wear the transmission out quickly (an issue only related to the Td6, these had different gearboxes to the petrol powered cars and the TDV8)
The TDV8 should creep into your price range, though there are some potential horrors regarding turbochargers and EGR valves. The rest of the cars seem well screwed together, and they seem to last big mileages if well maintained. Great engines for towing, and they're just as fast as the n/a V8 petrol but use half as much fuel.
