Discussion
So after 6 years of MR2'ing i plan to sell my MR2 around July - August next year! (I'm taking it to Le Mans first as a last hurrah!)
I've been thinking an awful lot about what i want next , combining what the MR2 sells for with what i can save. I expect my budget to be in the 7-8 maybe even 9k zone.
My List and requirements are as follows
2 Seater convertible (or Targa/T-tops)
Must be "Special" (no generic 3-series convertibles please)
Must be available in bright colours! (No shiny primer)
Doesn't have to be fast , but needs to be interesting to drive.
Good engine noise ideally
Manual
At the moment i have the following ideas , 1. being the car i think about the most.
1. Nissan 350z Roadster
2. Porsche Boxster 987
3. Honda S2000
4. Toyota MR2 AW11
5. BMW Z3 3.0
This isn't going to happen till next year, but i'm still interested to hear peoples thoughts and opinions.
I probably think about this way more than i actually should! one of the problems of being a car guy i suppose!
Feel free to hit me with any additional ideas!
And for those who are wondering , my MR2 is an unmodified 1997 UK Spec Mk2 (T-Bar) in good condition , dare i say it Rust-free!
I expect to try and sell i for 4-5k
And the MR2 is a second car , so the replacement doesn't have to be practical

For me it would probably be between the S2000 and the Boxster. I think the value for money offered by the 987 Boxster at the moment is fantastic, the only problem you might find is that most of them are painted in resale colours - pity as imo it looks epic in Racing Yellow!
There is one on Auto Trader in my favorite Porsche colour at the moment! It is the only one in that colour it seems.
I see what you mean about the majority being resale silver!

This ^^^ or (if you can find one) an SRT6 Crossfire (definitely not 'run of the mill', though I do appreciate it is marmite)Type R Tom said:
That is a lovely thing, i do love that shape of the SLK , however you reminded of a requirement i forgot to note down.I would ideally prefer a Manual.
Awesome colour.
I recently got a 2003 BMW 3.0 Z4 as the daily station smash.
60k miles. Mint condition. All the options. £5k.
Its quick but economical, and can be driven sideways controlably down the country lanes on route to the station at 5am.
Its not brightly coloured, but sounds great. And I have been surprised I have actually kept it for 6 months which is a record for me and a daily..
Plus, even for a two seater little soft top, its quite manly.

I'd look for a Z4 rather than a Z3 - the Z3 does seem to suffer from rust.
You'd get a really good facelift 3.0Si well within your budget, but with a stretch you might get a Z4M, which is rather special:- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-BMW-Z4M-3-2-2dr-RO...

+ wan for the SRT-6.
Very tuneable car, and surprises a lot of people who expect it to be a bag of poo.
TBH even the non srt-6 is a formidable car, even more so for its price point. Throw on an E55 intake + maf + tb and a free'er flowing exhaust and you have a fun car for very little money.
Bad side is that the steering is a tad numb, although its vastly improved with lowering springs (and even more so with sports shocks, the whole set is circa 600 squids).

For me it would be the:
350Z very good cars with potential to be even better
S2000 because they're a great drivers car the only reason I put the 350Z ahead is because I prefer the engine
Z4 3.0 it's not as good a steer as the Boxster but it's a more reliable steer.
My thoughts exactly. Word for word.350Z very good cars with potential to be even better
