Hi, I may possibly have to get my own car soon instead of a company car.

I keep been drawn to a BMW 335d M Sport x drive Auto especially in the Estoril Blue. My budget would be around the £18k mark.
I must admit I've never had anything to do with BM's in the past, what is people's thoughts on this car? Is there anything to look out for or any alternatives people would recommend?

Any replies as always much appreciated.

Shameless thread bump!

I've been looking at something like this https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Any thoughts or alternatives I should be considering?

Lad at my place runs a 435d as his work car, puts circa 1500 miles a week on it, hes just done the 100k mark and had it remapped, he's convinced its still pays him not to have a car, he drives everywhere like he stole it and rarely achieves over 25mpg (he has a works fuel card).

Its never missed a beat! his last e9x variant went onto 265k

I had a Touring in Estoril for two years and 24,000 miles. Loved it and would be happy to get into another one. Acceleration was always chuckle-inducing. Apparently the suspension and tyres meant it didn't have great handling but I'm so far away from being a driving god that I didn't notice anything untoward.

I had a brand new 2015 330D X-Drive M-Sport, good fun although perhaps a little too easy to drive. Rear light clusters had a lot of condensation from almost the start and I'm sure there was something else but can't remember. Couldn't have been all that important then!

But, what I did find quite frightening was when the oil sump gasket started leaking at less than 35k miles and less than three years old - and it took BMW two and a half days to fix. Apparently they had to strip the whole X-Drive system, disconnect the sub-frame etc etc. Thankfully it was under warranty.

Did a few trips to Manchester in it and the car did make the journey pass very quickly and without being tired.

Paid under that for a 2016 with 40k on the clocks for my 335d.

Make sure you get one with xenon headlamps.

Absolutely lovely motors - probably one of the best all rounders out there.

Go for a 2015+ model, make sure it meets the ULEZ emission requirements.

That is concerning to hear but feedback about the car sounds mainly positive.

What would people choose if it was a direct choice between the 335d and a similar spec/age/price Audi A4 or A6 3.0tdi quattro?

To be fair the majority of my driving was very short runs, so not ideal for the diesel.

335d would be my choice. I could be wrong but isn't the current quattro just an open diff Haldex system? The BMW with Xdrive still bias more to the rear wheels so it's good fun.

Was given a 335D GT as a works rental a number of times over the past 2 years. Epic vehicle. Very comfortable and long legged. I liked the slightly elevated driving position the GT offers and the boot is massive. It would easily do 42 mpg on a run and that included using the grin inducing sport mode. 600Nm of torque really does have to be experienced. biggrin

Absolutely love mine - although averaging 24.9mpg locally!

Forget about the Audi’s, get the 335d.

Try to get an LCI model as I heard pre 2015 models had a lot of body roll and didn’t inspire confidence through the bends, but that doesn’t matter as it has so much shove, you can slow right down before the bend and get back to the same speed instantly!

I also suggest you go for one with the M Sport + pack and xenons/LED’s (if LCI). Some time towards the end of 2015 or start of 2016, they made the LED headlights standard on the M sports. The M sport plus pack gives you the bigger brakes with the blue callipers, 19 inch 2 tone wheels, HK Audio and privacy glass, completes the car in my opinion. I think 335d’s without the plus pack still came with the bigger brembo brakes but they’re not painted blue.

I have a 430d and I struggle to think of what will replace it as it’s just brilliant, mine is down 60 bhp and 60 lbft as well, the good thing is, I never say, I should have gone for the 35d as there’s no need, anything more is a bonus. Average consumption for me is 28-32 during the summer and 32-38 in the winter, it should be the other way around but during the winter when the weather is like this I take it easy as with the torque on offer, summer tyres with the Runflat’s, you feel the car slip and slide quite a lot if you press on.

I seriously suggest you buy one with the pro nav, m sport plus pack and the LED lights, if you can’t, try a 330d with the most desirable options as it’s a good compromise, a compromise I made 2 years ago, basic 435d or a kitted out 430d. I didn’t regret it at all!

Thanks for all the replies, really helpful.

I've got a much better idea now of how I want it spec'd, also I've never really looked at the 4 series so I'm going to go check them out. I need to have some test drives and go from there. lick

I had a 2016 335d M Sport as a hire car for a week and loved it. Just never got tired of the grunt! Was disappointed to hand it back. As someone else mentioned if you can find one with M Sport+ Pack (or the M performance addons) and Pro Media then they look great. Estoril wouldn't be my choice though...
