I tow boats , I've tried them all and always come back to the Toyota Landcruiser Amazon (98-07) . Don't worry about the miles , buy on condition and history . 03 onwards gearbox helps with engine braking but earlier models are slightly simpler .
Only exception to the above is if you are willing to go American . Had a Chevrolet 3500 , genuinely didn't know that you had anything behind you but wasn't exactly a day to day car .

I tow with a touareg 2.5TDI and it tows 1600KGS with ease but If I could choose again I would go for the 3.0 V6
