Need to get a car for my 44mile round trip to work. 90% motorway so looking at a diesel. Only have around 2k to spend (if my insurance ever pay out) and i habe found a volvo s40 1.6d 2006. Has anyone had any experience with these cars ? Are they reliable and how much would a cam belt change cost as i think its due on the one im looking at. Cheers

Don't go for the 1.6d it'll be the Peugeot engine found in the Focus Mazda3 & Citroen it really isn't a good engine, you'd be better off with the 2.0d.

My call is the Alfa 147 in 1.9 form it's a very good reliable engine:

I had a 09 plate Volvo C30 with the 1.6D. Thought it was a decent economical engine and suited my 45 mile motorway commute. Just make sure you get a car with cruise control to take the stress out the journey.

As mentioned above, it's in a few cars, Ford, PSA, so parts and knowledge are easy to find.

I had a C4 VTR+ with the same 1.6 diesel engine, it was a company car and covered 120k in 3 years without fault. I then had a Picasso with the same engine as a temp car while awaiting a new one. That had 140k on the clock when I was given it, no engine issues although the rest of the car was rattly! My wife has a 5008 with the same engine, no issues to report so far although we've only had it 8 months. I realise there's many a horror story online about this engine, but I've yet to experience the horror. In our 5008 it's seriously under powered though, especially once it's loaded up with 3 kids, a wife and a weeks worth of holiday stuff plus bikes on the back. Acceleration is sedate to say the least, but then my daily drive is a 280bhp Focus ST. Having said that, even fully loaded in that big thing, it returns 55mpg on a run and is quiet.
