Hi guys,

Currently own a Stage 1 MK5 GTI HIGHLINE DSG with a very hig spec. Potentially looking to upgrade cars as I’ll be commuting via train so this will be vechile using around town or perhaps for a 6 mile journey to the station everyday.

However, it will be a car that needs to ready for all weekend abilities. I’m 23 and don’t have any kids currently.

Looking at suitable replacements but need ideas.

Currently entertaining:

E91 335i Touring Auto
B7 S4 Avant Manual

Anyone know how these compare? I used to own a B6 3.0 Quattro Avant auto - it was nice but quite slow.

Any other ideas, feel free to suggest or do I just keep my GTI.

Maybe you should stop talking in riddles and code and mention somewhere the car you are talking about is presumably a golf

If you like the golf then you will like the S4, its quick and never short of grip but does feel dull. The 335i will be more fun but finding a good one will be hard work. Personally i'd sell the Golf, buy a Ford KA for the station and then buy a Boxster/Z4 35i for the weekend.

You'll be lucky to find a decent E91 and it will commander a premium when you do.

Have you considered the E90 335i instead?
I know of one with a very good history behind it for sale wink

I’d imagine that most people on here would know MK5 GTI without the mention of that. Just to clarify, I drive a golf.

That would be good idea, however I’m trying to save for a house so wouldn’t go down with the parents having two cars when we have so many!

Boxster/Z4 is still a good suggestion mind!

Yeah they seem to be a little bit higher than the coupe!

Perhaps- depending on price and spec, if you have any pics or info feel free to PM me!

Spec is the best you will get (every option except a couple).

'09 N54 LCi manual.
65k miles
Around £13k of options (list was £50k)
Has had turbos, waterpump, thermostat, injectors, HPFP, walnut blast and Valve cover done.
£13k (I've got an actual advert for it if you want the details and I have a topic in "readers cars" too)

Being honest - that’s out of my budget currently - if you send me the topic thread nevertheless I’ll see what I can work out money wise to check viability!

Flog the golf, buy a saab for buttons and tune it to 250 bhp. Lots of go, comical handling, big load space, cheap insurance and money in the bank for the house. Everyone's happy including your folks.

There’s nothing like precision, though. Then again, this is pistonheads, and people often write crap.

Actually i've just noticed you mentioned B7 S4, that will ruin you in running it and although they sound nice it will be slower than the 3.0TDi you had.

If you are saving for a house then keep what you have as any money spent on a car will be wasted.

If you're not using the car for commuting why not get something a little less dull? You're young and sound like you're earning decent so no need to lumber yourself with something as dull as a German barge.

Save that for when you're in your 30's with 2 kids!

I've had a B7 S4 6 or 7 years ago. It bored me after a while. The v8 is nice but the car is too stiff and under steered a lot. I prefer the feel of a rwd and BMW always deliver.

I've just sold an E91 335i. I had it for about a year. I bought it to replace my E61 550i. In the end I just preferred the 550i. The 335i is a good car if you like the feel of a turbo. You'll have trouble finding a 335i in estate form as they're very rare. Mine was an LCI 2009 auto. Pre LCI are 500 per year tax.

If you fancy a V8 then think about a 550i. The engine is great and the package is good. I'm not sure why you're so keen on an estate. I like them but I have a Porsche for fun. I keep an estate for boring stuff. The E61 550i is a good car but probably more rare than the E91 335i.

If you want an interesting V8 for pootling about in then why not think about a 650i. They have an expensive feel to them as they were 60 plus thousand new. That puts them in a different class to the 3 series and a4.

If you must go estate then yes the 335i is nice. I prefer the 550i because the car feels a bit more grown up being bigger. The 335i is probably quicker but you'll enjoy the feel of the v8 more. And it just feels funny when the big v8 hustles the big car along.

The 335i is known to throw up problems and expense here and there.

The 5 litre - well it's really a 4.8 - is actually quite reliable. I treat mine like sheet and it feels as solid as granite. I've had mine for 3 and a half years.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I had a 3.0 Petrol which is even slower but that’s probably the most sensible advice if I’m honest!
