Please tell me if I’m mad but I have an itch to scratch.

I have a 2012 E92 BMW 320d coupe. It’s very nice, it’s done 82000 miles and there isn’t anything to dislike about it.

I’ve got it into my head however that I need a straight six. This makes no economical sense but sod it.

Budget wise though I’m looking at a 2010 330i. It has 15000 fewer miles on the clock and spec is almost the same if not slightly better than my current car.

The only thing holding me back is that it is 2 years older than my current car. I don’t know if that makes a difference but it shouldn’t really, it’s the same, post face lift model with fewer miles.

Anyway, feel free to tell me whether you think I should go for it or not!

If it's what you want then go for it.

We all usually like to try and change for a car that is better than the one that we had before, although sometimes it suits us to trade down ( that's not what I'm suggesting in your case ).

Thing is, what is better? Depending on your priorities better might be newer, lower mileage, more power, roomier, greener, more toys. It doesn't have to be all of those, it could be any combination, and your proposed change certainly ticks a few of those boxes.

A bit suburban of you if you are only bothered "what the neighbours will think" of an older plate :-)

In that situation the engine would overrule the age difference for me.

I'd definitely go for it. The 6 cylinder engine will reward your decision on every start!

If the age is an issue, which I understand, then perhaps a private plate would be worth considering. Get one that isn't trying to spell something that it clearly doesn't smile

You're going up in the performance stakes so it makes perfect sense that you have to go to a slightly older car.

Thanks for your helpful replies. If I’m honest there is a bit of a keeping up with the Jones’ feeling which i know is silly as it will be a better car overall.

I might make some enquiries into it. (This is what happens when you have 11 days off over Christmas with not enough to do!)

If you're that bothered about the age you could spend £280 on a private plate & that's problem solved as far as the Joneses are concerned.

Wouldn’t bother with this keeping up with joneses mentality - never ends well.

I've just gone from a 55 plate car to a W plate, I'm pretty sure it's the oldest car in the street.....

...... And the only one with a V8. biggrinbiggrin
