Looking to buy a new car and I’ve found a few but unsure and have a few questions.
First car is a Sirocco 2.0 TSI GT 2010, 65k miles, £8,900, petrol from VW main dealer, is this a decent reliable car that I should go for or is it too pricey for the age?
I’ve heard that this year of car is gen1 so could have problems that occur, what mk is this? I don’t know.

Second car is a Fiesta ST 2013/14 around 40-60k miles around £8500-£9000. Any common problems or things I should know?

I’m not a big car guy so please help me smile

Thank you

Can't help on the Scirocco but my daughter has a Golf Mk 6 and has had nothing but problems with it. My sister just returned a lease Tiguan with the dash lit like a Christmas tree. VWs are not as infallible as they would like you to believe.

I have had two STs. The earlier cars are being recalled to fit a coolant sensor which takes 2-3 days which I didn't have available so I changed it for a 65 plate. So make sure this work has been done - you may need the VIN to check it online.

The only problems I had with mine were a sticky rear caliper which meant the handbrake was rubbish so check it works correctly. Not sure if that was an issue on early cars or just mine.
Check it has decent tyres not mix n match ditchfinders, a common problem with budget performance cars, I have found. Check for uneven wear.
Check the door sill plates light up - early ones were prone to failure and should havee been replaced under warranty.
Wheels are very prone to kerbing so check those.
Rear exhaust rubber hangers like to break but prothane ones are a tenner each.
Upper rear spring isolators are made out of Victoria sponge but a pair of prothane replacements are £50.
Headlights are poor - you'll want about £20 for some uprated dip beam bulbs (mains aren't too bad). Check the front DRLs work.
Check carefully for any repairs, not necessarily from accidents but also people stealing the bodykit.

Go for a minimum ST2. The ST1 has basic cloth seats, the ST2 has half leather and bum warmers and the ST3 has auto unlock on approach and I think power folding mirrors. The downside of the ST3 is you need a Faraday bag to stop people capturing the key signal so the ST2 offers the best value IMHO.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been thinking hard and I think I’ll stay clear of Volkswagen just be safer than sorry.

I’ve listed all the things you’ve said and I’ll be sure to check them and ask the dealer about it! The ST3 is out of my price range anyway so I cannot get that.

I’ve been looking at ST3, 2014 plate with 48k mileage. It’s black but does have a couple chips on the back of the car. It’s selling for £8900 from ford.
What kind of mileage is good for this kind of year?
And would you recommend I go for this?

Thanks

I would never recommend any car I hadn't seen myself.
What I can tell you is my first one was black and they tend to chip easily although mainly on the front.
Mileage depends on whether the car has been leased, with a limited mileage, or sold to a private buyer.
My first one had 12000 on the clock after 2 years and my current one had 20000 after 3 years.
Your 2014 has done 9600-12000 miles a year which used to be average but these days, maybe people do less miles.
Mileage is not the key point, check for a full service history and condition - some are major services costing about £300, others about half that.

I've had both

owned a 2010 scirocco 210 tsi dsg for about 5 years and a fiesta st3 for less than 1

the 2010 model should have the newer engine from the mk6 gti, I believe the change over occurred during the last of the 59 plate cars,

the biggest issue seems to be the timing chain tensioner which can fail causing the chain to slip and ultimately require a new engine.

Mine did fail at less than 35k miles, fortunately VW agreed to cover most of the cost of repair,
there is a tell tale rattle than usually occurs on starting the car, if I had been aware at the time I could have just replaced the tensioner with the updated version and solved the problem. at 65k miles it may have already been changed so worth checking.

other than this the car was 100% reliable and one of the only cars I regret selling.

the st3 was ordered to replace the Scirocco and also because I wanted something with a manual gearbox due to my daughter taking driving lessons at the time, so I wanted something she could get some extra practice in

the fiesta was more frugal than the Scirocco, I averaged about 39 mpg compared to about 26 in the Scirocco, it was also good fun to drive and handled /cornered better than the Scirocco.

the biggest issue I had with it was the ride which I found pretty harsh,
different tyres may have improved things but with that and a few other things like the uncomfortable seats, cheap interior, paintwork that seemed to suffer stone chips and scratch very easily and the fact it never felt that quick till you got it properly warmed up I decided to get rid.
I'd definitely recommend a good test drive before buying which is something I didn't do before ordering.

I can't comment on servicing as I got rid before the 1st service was due but should be pretty cheap and probably a bit less than the Vw.

Insurance was higher on the fiesta, probably due to them being more likely to get stolen and practicality wise there isn't much in it neither being particularly spacious.

Sorry I haven’t replied, new members aren’t allowed to post sometimes, that and work.

That thread is very helpful so thank you, I’ve got a black one coming down for me to view on the weekend which I hope is good! It has stone chips but hopefully not too bad on the front!

Thanks pal!

Awesome, I’ve decided not to go for the scirocco as it’s had quite bad feedback but others have said there’s is perfect so it’s an odd ball with that one!

The fuel on ST is definitely what I want more of!

I guess I’ll have to keep the services up to date and just treat it nicely then hopefully it’ll treat me nice back haha. I’ve test driven the ST and it’s pretty nice handles very well!!

(Again sorry if I don’t reply, forum is weird)
