Hello fellow Pistonhead geeks

What would you recommend, a Hyundai I30 1.0T Petrol or a 1.6T Diesel?
Both same spec cars, similar miles (10k a year)
I can't make my mind up...

Depends

Do you really need a diesel? If you don't do enough (motorway) miles, you'll clog the DPF in no time.

Mostly short trips /around town = petrol.
Longer runs /motorway etc = diesel.

I'm thinking of diesel since both cars are the same price and i'll be doing reasonably quick / longish drives in it

If you're doing the miles then the diesel is the way to go.

If you spend 29 days town driving and 1 day on a long run then petrol is the way to go, a petrol on a long run will get close to diesel mpg but around town on short trips will be better, don't forget diesel is near on 10p a litre more expensive so roughly £5 a tank

Also; if you are actually buying it then I'd go Petrol as Diesel car residuals are st and getting stter.

Ah I see the "Diesel Nigel's" are about

How much more is the purchase cost of the diesel cost compared to the petrol ?

What is the difference in mpg?

Diesels (rightly) are going to be taxed into oblivion

They're not going to be taxed out of existence, the OP states they're the same price & he'll be doing 10k a year which is borderline on the diesel/petrol option. So he states he does longish miles when he uses the car at which point I'd call diesel, if he said mainly short journeys & town driving then he should go for a petrol.

So rather than just saying ones bad & the other is good why not read the OP's requirements & give an opinion on their needs rather than a bias one way or another. wink

The diesel is one second quicker 0-60mph & the difference is 15mpg in the diesels favour.

I've driven both. Diesel will do 50-60mpg, petrol 35-40mpg (conditions/driving style dependant)

Autotrader you can argue those figures aren't real but that'll be the case for both.

Someone who's driven both says there's a 10-15mpg difference & the petrol is slower.

As I said i recommend a car after hearing the usage of the person asking rather than blanket dismissing one power source or another. wink

Interesting, I interpreted the 10k in the OP as the cars both having 10k miles on them.
