Good afternoon,

Following on from my Are cars expensive or what? thread...

A new Polo is to be purchased. It'll have the 1.0TSI engine, SE trim plus metallic paint and parking sensors.

The RRP of the car is ITRO £17,300

Via Carwow the price is £14,900 which includes a £1,000 contribution when taken out on a PCP at representative 4.9% APR.

Over the PCP period the interest costs about £1,600. PCP suits us so we're not interested in saving that £600 by paying up front.

The salespeople are unhappy that we have used Carwow and are complaining that it's costing them £350, which makes you wonder why they don't offer reasonable discounts until you have already gone down that road?

Anyway we aren't worried about who we complete through but I am asking for comments on the above and suggestions for how to maximise value? Servicing plan?

I bought a (different) VW last year and Orange Wheels were significantly cheaper than Car Wow.

Good luck.

I'm also looking at Polos atm.

Drivethedeal is quoting £14,396 for the SE 95 with metallic paint and parking sensors.

R-line and SEL have parking sensors as standard so you may find the PCP monthly payments maybe similar because the future value.?

I find the interiors a little dull, so we are considering a Beats version, the wheels are nicer, the interior and seats are brighter (but this is all a matter of taste).

Interesting to see how much is in it for CarWow - and thus how much you can try to get your local dealer to beat them by rather than just match it.

Just out of interest what delivery times are you being quoted? I enquired about a Skoda Octavia lease a few weeks ago, only to be told it was 25 weeks for a DSG and 21 weeks for a manual.

Have to say, for that money I would be tempted by the UP GTi

£15K+ for a bloody Polo. Really?! I must be getting old but that seems crazy money to me. Surely there are better options for that sort of cash or similar cars for a lot less?

That’s what they cost now. 2 years ago I paid the same money for a Skoda Fabia as my dad did for a Honda Civic 10 years before.

Orange wheels ~£300 cheaper and DrivetheDeal ~£500 cheaper

We have been walking to the VW main dealer which is literally down the road. We would prefer them to be the supplying dealer as they have handled our enquiries / test drive. When we mentioned Carwow they complained that they would have to pay Carwow £350. There is apparently no way around that once the enquiry has been made.

All of the enquiries were in my name however my Mum is the prospective buyer so I wonder if we can work it that way?

Secondly, surely if they undercut Carwow then they have provided a better price compared to them and we would be at liberty not to go through Carwow?

Surely if they could split the difference between the DtD price and the CW price everybody would be happy and they wouldn't have to pay their £350?

Our situation is a little different as my Mum intends to pay the balloon unless she has a significant change in circumstances. She has pretty conservative tastes so the plain Jane version should do it. The SEL is a bit more money and Mum doesn't want the climate control or 16" wheels so the SE is a good saving. Not sure I'd spend £14.5k on a new car which doesn't have climate control but each to their own!

I've just realised I'm being an idiot aren't I, Why give both the online broker and the main dealer an opportunity to make a profit margin on this? Just order through DtD who are cheapest, right?

My wife still has the Sales Invoice (and car) for the Polo that her dad bought back in 1997. A 1.4 CL costing £11,480. Adjusted for inflation using the Bank of England inflation calculator, that's £19,863 as of 2017.

Sounds like a plan to me. It's your money to spend how you like. Good luck.

What is the catch with buying through an online broker?

There must be one, right? Otherwise everyone would be doing it?

Can’t wait for threads in the future when people buy through brokers and then complain when they have to drive a distance to get the car serviced or warranty work carried out because their local dealer has closed down.

Other than not building a relationship with the supplying dealer, none from my one time using one car before this one.

But since I also shop for servicing, I'm not the sort of person who goes to the same place unless they maintain service / deals.

Current car; local dealer matched broker after a lot of negotiation, but they're stupidly expensive for servicing, so another dealer gets that.

It's a bit like online switching - if everyone did it the suppliers would compete, but enough don't for it not to matter to the suppliers / dealers (yet, hopefully).

My online broker was about £3k cheaper than anything else I could achieve.

I have 3 dealers around me, all about 45 minutes drive as I live in the sticks.

I think a £3k saving makes it worthwhile (and the car was supplied by one of those 3 dealers that are 45 minutes away).

By all means, make a fair profit but if a garage is £3k more expensive than an online dealer, money talks....

Besides, don’t garages make more money from servicing than sales?

And finally, according to PH, very few people actually buy brand new cars now anyway. It’s either Bangernomics or personal leases.

I get it, and I have a conscience, hence I will give the dealer an opportunity to compete. I'm thinking currently to give them the business if they can get within a couple of hundred quid.

However part of me resents the fact that had my Mum walked into that dealership and attempted to negotiate a deal on a new car without using online brokers for comparison I'm 100% certain that the sales person would've sworn blind that they were giving the best deal possible and it would've transpired to be £1,500 more than the broker price.

This is the problem. The dealer would rob her blind given half a chance. Unless you’re talking real specialist stuff, new cars are just white goods. There is very little dealer value add. Go with whoever offers the best deal. The joke is, your local dealer is probably discounting the hell out of cars and supplying them all round the country and see the locals as a captive market to increase margins.

You can get a main dealer 2018 SE golf for 15k (asking) with sub 5k Miles. I know it’s not the same as new but the premium for brand new is quite high.
