I'm about to place an order for a new car and given how close we are to March right now, would it be advisable to wait for it to be delivered and subsequently registered in March in order to get the new 19 plate?

I already have a car that I could use in the mean time, so getting around isn't a problem.

My biggest concern is the residuals for the car, and whether it only have a 68 plate instead of a 19 plate will mean it'll be worth less when it comes to selling it a 4-5 years down the line...

The dealer said they are able to get it in as soon as the end of this month.

If I was buying I’d wait.

I’m leasing so middle of Feb works for me.

In that case negotiate hard for a bigger discount, and buy a cheap dateless plate.

Well, it looks like I missed the January delivery date, and there's now a small queue, which means I'll only get the car on the tail end of March, so 19 plate it is!

However, before the salesman even checked the available delivery date, I tried haggling hard for a further discount if the car is delivered ASAP and registered as a 68 plate, and to my surprise (although it probably shouldn't be), he mentioned the amount of profit from the car sales is close to zero, and the only thing they are banking on is if they hit the targets given from the main dealer finance company.

Not sure how true this is - but I am no doubt very happy with my purchase with 18% off, floor mats, although he wouldn't budge much when I asked for a full tank of fuel; the most he said he could give is 1/4 tank, as most people only get the tiny bit of 'delivery fuel' and it will really eat into the profits of the business...
