Our Sorento is throwing up more and more issues and we are worried it is going to become too expensive to keep on the road, so we want to prepare for if we have to get rid of it.
What car is a safe bet to buy for as little as possible? Ideally less than £1000. I know that is asking for a lot, but we could go a bit higher if the car will last longer.
Any ideas?

What he said! Buy on condition at that price range not type. Look for something with a recent mot but don't bother looking for a specific car as you'll just restrict your choice.

c1/107/Aygo

I got a £1k stop gap c1 6 months ago, I'll still be quite happy if I only get 12 months out of it but think it could go on a lot longer.

A search for “12 months MOT” on Gumtree, FB Marketplace or Autotrader, and then sorting in price ascending order should find something interesting?

Aygo

Change from £1000.00, 7 months MOT, £20 tax, 87k miles and unlikely to go wrong:

If you do go for an Aygo, they can leak. Don't fall for "It's a bit wet because we just gave it a power wash".

Or..... a Yaris:

Bit bigger, a little bit more powerful, won't rust (nor will the Aygo). 85k miles, 2 owners, plenty of MOT left. More to tax though.

This, it should lead you to a corolla or civic.

I like the look of the civics, the slightly more modern version with the wrap around dial display. However, I doubt one of those would be in our ideal budget!
I'm not entirely sure what to do really, we could get by with just our Octavia for a while and then get something more expensive, but it would be very awkward.
I just don't like the thought of impending bills.

Is something like this XC70 a decent buy if it goes for a low amount?
We both love Volvo's and would definitely want one. Or is this likely to throw us just as many issues as our Sorento?
