2007 Cayenne- madness?
Discussion
To put it in context....
I'm working out in Qatar for the foreseeable and rather than use my monthly allowance for a rental euro box I'm thinking of buying something that I wouldn't even think about back in the UK- petrol is circa 35p a litre so a big engine petrol 'something' does appeal.
Looked at a H3 Hummer yesterday, a 2007 for less than 3700 Sterling, due to the weather there's not much rust, but I wasn't as taken with it as I thought I would be.
Anyway, back to the title, a Cayenne popped up for sale near me, similar sort of price, maybe less with some negotiation, 100k Miles, (not km), bodywork looks pretty tidy etc, etc.
So, what's the worst that could happen on a 100k Porsche? It's difficult to say if it's had the arse thrashed off it, but given the sheer volume of speed cameras (and fines that go with them) it can't have had too hard a life- can it??
It's metallic grey, with a beige/orange leather interior.
So, worth a punt, or go for an X5 or go for a boring Pajero ?

If it is a 2007 it could be a 4.8 957 variant. No such issues. I had a 2007 4.8 Turbo. I had it from 60000 miles through to around 110000 miles. In that time, as well as routine servicing, I had to replace the half shaft (known issue with bearings going); thermostat (jams open) and the biggie was timing chain replacement, as it had stretched and threw an EML. This is an engine out job and cost about 7k at an OPC (covered under warranty).
Apart from that flawless....amazing bit of kit to drive.

My 2003 Cayenne (S) has about 105k miles on it now.
When I bought it (2013 / ~80k miles) I had a fairly big bill sorting some stuff out - I should have checked the car over better when I viewed it. It was my own fault - by the time I'd arrived to view it, I'd decided I didn't want one - so although I had a cursory look around, I didn't look at it properly. Changed my mind a week later which meant I essentially bought a car I hadn't checked.
But anyway - apart from that initial big bill it's been fine since then. I noticed it was losing coolant in the summer - I thought it was the radiator but it turned out to be the expansion tank, so was a pretty cheap fix.
The radio reception has always been pretty poor, and has now got worse - when I turn the heated rear window on, I lose reception which is a tad annoying at this time of year.
Apart from that, there is nothing wrong with it. It is my hack car, and unless something fairly serious breaks on it I tend to ignore it - but apart from the radio reception and the expansion tank, nothing has gone wrong with it for several years. It's probably worth about 50p these days - but it is still a really good car!

Welcome to the Sandpit! I'm in the Pearl, where abouts are you?
Ive too often poured over the plethora of cheap 4x4 Porka (About the only type of cheap Pork here these days!) I nearly went for an 'S' awhile ago as a full history seems easy enough to find despite the age however a friend of mine here sells nearly new ones for a living and he warned me off them completely, same goes for the X5.
The problem is getting someone who isnt the dealer who can do a convincing job at fixing them for a reasonable price, i'm told parts prices are x3 that of the UK.
Saying that you see lots around, so if you do go for it haggle HARD (Its the done thing here, 'Last price' then take a few k off) oh and most importantly, get it inspected in Salwa road once decided you want it, costs between 300-500riyal (haggle a lot on this too) and what ever you do run the VIN through Metrash2, you can see the accident data, 'Minor' is expected, 'Major' is to be avoided - Would be VERY difficult to sell on.
Feel free to send me a PM, I'll help out any way I can

Hi there, based at the airport working for an airline and currently in company accommodation in Old Airport until the family come out and we/they choose where we live.
I’m amazed at some of the pricing hence looking at cars I wouldn’t even consider back home- and thanks for the advice- I’m still waiting for the seller to get back to me, but again, everything seems to be on Doha time here...
Parts shouldn’t be too much of a problem as I travel a lot with work so picking up bits when I’m at home or elsewhere shouldn’t be too problematic and I’m pretty handy with the spanners for most bits..

Thought I'd do an update...
I'm picking up tomorrow a 2008 81,000 mile Cayenne S that I've paid the princely sum of £5300 for.
It's got full history, pano roof, 21 inch wheels, had some of the known issues sorted and comes with some extra coil packs and brake pads.
It's got a full years MOT (Istimara for those in Qatar), and unlike other places a full years comprehensive insurance(the car is insured rather than the person). Two european owners the latest an aero mechanic for the airforce here.
I can live with a few niggles for the sake of the v8, and given that fuel is 32p a litre means I can actually afford to run one here in Doha.

I'll move this over to the poverty pork section in due course (and quite apt) and update as I go along!.

Looks lovely. Sure it isn’t a GTS with those wheels?
I’ve had a 2007 S for over a year now. Only use it once a week. Not had any problems with it at all. I service it myself. Did a major when it first got it. Spark plugs, coil packs, oil, oil filter, air filters and pollen when I first got it along with new front tyres.
It’s due a minor service next month. 10 litres of Shell Helix Ultra, oil filter and sump plug washer is £56 from CarParts4Less.

I have heard that their air suspension is almost guaranteed to fail at around the 100k mark, but who knows for sure. I did notice when looking at these myself that those around the 95k mark disproportionately dropped in price suggesting that the sellers were aware of the impending problem also?

I had one air shock go soon after buying the car at ~80k miles, and a level sensor went a few years back. Can't predict when things fail of course, but I'm not expecting my suspension to suddenly fail (mine has done around 105k miles) - and the different settings you can use allow it to feel like quite a different car. I wouldn't have one without air suspension.
(And most cars drop in value once they pass 100k miles)
