1.0 petrol v 1.6 diesel Ford Focus

Afternoon all!
Looking for a bit of advice. I'm looking at purchasing a Ford Focus between 2012-2015 and I'm debating on whether to get the petrol or diesel model.
I only do around 8000 miles a year. My journey to work varies between bits of stop start traffic, 40mph stretches and some bits sat at 30mph. Once a month I tend to do a decent motorway journey from chesterfield to Doncaster.
I'm looking to cut my running costs to a minimum where possible (just sold a z4 that cost me quite a bit in petrol). A lot of reviews have said the 1.0 focus isn't that good on fuel compared to Ford's claims?
Would I be best with the ecoboost 125 or the 1.5/1.6 diesel?

The 1 series is getting about 25mpg on a mix of town, back roads and gets 35mpg on a run.
The fiesta got about 35mpg around town and back roads and mid 40's mpg on a run. The fiesta had a 5 speed box, I think the focus can be 6 speed.
Check that any recalls on the ecoboost engines have been done, if applicable.
Personally, I wouldn't touch a diesel although, as the market collapses, they may offer good value, in a "throw it away when the big bills roll in" sense.
The Fiesta ST does 38mpg all day long, if that is any guide.

From the way you're describing your usage I'd say petrol is the way to go for you, although the 125 1.0T is a good engine I'd seek out the 1.5T
Fuel wise there's only 5 mpg in it but in the real world the difference is around 3mpg obviously there's the £90 per year difference between the two but the extra grunt will make it worthwhile.

I have had both a diesel and petrol ford focus, I used to get around 50mpg mixed driving from a 2011 1.6ltr diesel and getting about 38-9mpg from a 2016 125ps 1ltre petrol mixed. I do 14k miles a year.
The ecoboost is a pretty good engine, fair amount of toque so feels relatively quick and sounds better than the diesel.
I would go with the petrol for 8k.
