Yep another one of these sorry.....

A mate of mine is getting a new job which involves around 20k mpa and visiting a lot of local businesses inc many farms. He has a budget of up to £7k max but will get mileage allowance @ 45p per mile.

His requirements for the new car would therefore be:
- Decent average MPG (50+)
- 4WD
- Cheap or zero tax
- Good sized boot
- Reliable
- Comfortable modern (ish) interior

Any suggestions?

I dont really think its important to have 4WD in this country but if this is a requirement I would look into a used diesel Audi A4 estate. Very practical car and there are a lot of them used.

If your friend needs the traditional high driving position associated with 4WD cars look into a used Nissan Qashqai diesel or Honda CRV. There are lots of then floating around and my friend has had no problems with his.

Just make sure its 4WD as many of these cars are only 2WD now.

Actually on 2nd thought I don't think and of the cars I listed has 0 road tax but I don't think any 4WD cars will have.

If 4WD is not a requirement a BMW 1 series, 3 series or 5 series with the 4 cyinder diesel engines would be one of my suggestions.

Really any car is good nowadays. Its like comparing apples and oranges.

First things first he won't be getting a car with £30/zero road tax especially if your friend is going to doing 20k a year comfort is also a big factor.

For 7k your friend will also want something with sensible miles on it too as well as an Auto box.

If your friend wants a proper 4wd then it's very hard to look past the Jeep Grand Cherokee:

A bit of a leftfield suggestion but I too get 45p per mile for work and for that job I drive a Mini Cooper D Clubvan. He probably doesn't want a van so go for the Hatch or Clubman.

I love cars (have had many) and driving and brought the Clubvan on a whim as a work vehicle and have to say I've been massively impressed. Its fun to drive, similar performance to a 205 GTI and handles like one, which to me is the perfect amount of performance on the road as you can use it. It's driven very hard and still averages 49.3mpg, (driven normally I would expect 60mpg) the TLC servicing form Mini is £270 for two services including 2x break fluid, feels rock solid/stable and I would compare it to a BMW 1 Series level confidence at motorway speeds. Fitted with its Nokian winter tyres I passed (with full traction) an abandend new Discovery stuck sideways unable to make it up a hill in the Chilterns during last weeks snow.

It hasn't missed a beat in 54000miles, paid for it's self nearly twice over and has remarkable residuals.

It's just a thought.
