Hi looking for some advice. Looking at buying a passat estate 2016 2.0tdi 150. Just trying to find out if you good people think it would be a good buy. It's a basic S model with 35k but looks nice in silver. It's going for £12500 which I think looks a great price. Always hearing stuff about dsg problems and wondering if it's still problematic. Any advice appreciated.

I’ve got a Passat 150TDI DSG (7 speeder though) so might be biased.

I’ll leave reliability to others as I’ve only done 20k in it since July but I think the S model is quite de-specced so do check that out carefully. I think it doesn’t have adaptive cruise or other niceties.

Good luck either way.

I'd never spend my own money on anything with a DSG 'box.

That’s helpful to the OP.

What don’t you like? Autos, the drive, reliability, economy, servicing?

Do you have a dislike for the Dry boxes, wet boxes or both? The six speeders or the seven speeders. There are a lot of different DSG boxes...

The dry clutch DQ200 had reliability issues at the start but that’s all over now. It’s also not a box that’s in a higher torque engine like the TDI 150. The wet clutches are quite different. They are also very common boxes in taxis so I think they have shown to offer reliability. If they do go wrong, now that there are so many DSG boxes out there, it’s not that much more expensive than a manual clutch to replace.

Something constructive for the OP would be welcome I guess.

Thanks for input . I'd heard something about dry and wet boxes but you reckon the newer ones are better? Would be getting a manual but my wife only drives autos and I've had past experience with an Audi a8 I bought years ago and gearbox was gubbed. Wasn't worth fixing. Checked advert and cars upto 13500. Must've been a mistake 😲

I agree with others, the basic S trim is incredibly thin on spec. SE, or even better SE Business, is where to go. On a used car shouldn’t be that much more but brings a huge difference in spec.

Thanks for all the links. I'm also on the lookout for a 3 bed semi if you've got time on your hands 😁 . Look at cars all the time on auto trader but when you're actually looking to buy one it starts to become a minefield 💣💥

Dont know about DSG reliability but Ford and Vauxhall depreciate like a bowling ball dropped from a cliff you will be able to get more bang from your buck with those brands if buying used.

The passat is a nice car also so if this is what you want go for it and good luck searching.

Thanks again for replies. Wife now saying passat looks too big. Golf estates I'm looking at now but most are the 1.6 tdi and a bit bland 🤔

Astra Elite 165 this is the VFM option, you get a loaded car & pocket a not insignificant amount of change there as reliable as anything else I've listed so having 4k in your back pocket would probably swing it for me.

All drive well for me I'd struggle to look past the Astra yes it's a older model but that saving is hard to look past, after the it would be the Focus/308 GT.

I've also found the golf estates seem to sit for a while when you compare them to a passat they just aren't as good value IMO

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Be a few weeks before I get something by look of it but will post some pics when I get something. I fancy a 5 series but she's not having it. Maybe should get her hypnotised !

How many miles do you drive a year?

The reason I ask is that the Passat is considerably more refined than a Golf if you’re a high mileage driver.

If you only drive average mileage, then it’s not really a biggie.

Only do about 8k a year. Mostly for wife dropping kids and getting to work and weekends, camping etc. Last camping trip in old s60 couldn't have squeezed in a family of midges. Also noticing the fuel more now cause wife's doing a bit more travel for work. She averages about 26mpg. tank

I’d forget diesel then and go petrol.

I have the 150 TDI engine but I drive 30k miles a year so it makes sense.

I agree with the above with that mileage I'd go petrol.
