Car for a tall guy
Discussion
Hello there!
I just joined the forum to get some advice on what car to buy.
I lived in the UK for 9 years, never owned a car as I was living in London, but now I'm living in the Netherlands and need a car to go to work ... I know this is not a NL forum but I could not find one for their market.
In any case, if anyone is happy to suggest me a car I would be grateful.
As I said, I would use the car to go to work 40km/25miles each way and some ocasional travelling around continental Europe.
Main things to note for, I'm 1,90cm/6ft2 so would prefer a car that I would not be bumping my head on the top all the time.
In terms of budget I'm willing to spend something around 15k EUR but flexible on that.
Happy to buy a used one with a bit of mileage on the clock if that means it would have a good discount on price.
Would love to have a car with android auto but not sure if that would mean a trade off in another spec.
I do like to listen to music so if it has a good sound system that I could enjoy music at high speed on a motorway, that would be good.
Definitely petrol or hybrid as diesel cars get double taxed and I would like to keep the running costs low.
The website that I usually look for cars is this one https://www.autotrack.nl/

People can be 'tall' for many reasons; long back, long thighs, long shins or any combination. They can also be wide, narrow or in-between.
Therefore it's quite variable as to which cars suit 'tall' people.
I'm over 6ft (but not 6ft7) but I'm very limited in which cars I can fit into. I used to do a lot of rowing/cycling/rugby and as a result have chunky thighs which won't fit under many steering wheels, especially A- or B- segment cars.
It also means a lot of car seats with side bolsters are too narrow.
Sometimes cars lack headroom, too, meaning that even some quite large C- or D- segment are too small for me.
I can nearly always get a good comfortable driving position in a Vauxhall (Opel), which seem to be the most adaptable to a wide range of body shapes and sizes.

I'm 6ft4 and I have no issues with most cars, the question is though do you need space for rear passengers or not? If so that's a different matter, the biggest car I've driven space wise is a Skoda Superb, I can sit comfortably in the front and with the front seat in position I can sit equally comfortably in the back behind said seat it is so big.
If your not fussed for rear legroom though most cars would be fine. I also have an MX-5 which I am comfortable with

this is a really valid point, I'm only 6ft4 with the wind behind me and there are some cars that suit me better than others. My upper legs are quite long so I don't like a car with a short seat base. We had an 2006 Mx5 years ago and I had no issues with it but I had a Pug 406 that was terrible even though the seats were quite comfortable. I wouldn't say my E92 BMW was great, but my Passat is.Therefore it's quite variable as to which cars suit 'tall' people.

Any upmarket spec VW Golf/Passat/Tiguan/Jetta* from 2016. SE and above specs get the 'Composition Media' CD radio with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, height adjustable seats, telescopic/lift/lower steering wheel, lumbar support and a big choice of engine spec in used models. DSG auto for crowded cities, and the Antwerpen ring road at 17:00 on Friday afternoon. Heated seats on some options, plus parking sensors. Tall people fit in them.
€15K gets a good used model. Some say cars are cheaper in Germany, but I don't know about registering one in NL.
