I’m looking at a 12-18month old W222 350.

I do around 18-20k miles p.a., so not huge but significant. Obviously the MB S Class is an incredible car, however I’m just wondering what are the pitfalls of owning something of that complexity if it goes wrong? I’ve heard horror stories costing over £10k. Would (could) you extend the warranty?

An idea of running and repair costs too would be really handy.

The “sensible” choice is a 530d which I could buy nearly new or new.

Thanks

You will be able to extend the warranty as 12-18 months is well within the standard manufacturers warranty of 3 years so there will be no worrys about anything going wrong for a while yet
An S class/A8/7-series is in another league for motorway driving to a 530d or A6 size car even though these are already very good

Extend the warranty & get the S Class.

I'd be more concerned about the biblical depreciaton on the S class rather than possible repair costs as you have plenty of time to extend the warranty.

Those are two completely different cars. Cars like the 5 series and E class might feel smooth and effortless to drive, but the S class and other cars in that segment are on a whole different level, and priced accordingly. Get the S class and extend the warranty.

Looked at the depreciation for both...
S-Class 36% depreciation
530d 45%

Not a direct comparison on age, sclass 1 year old, BMW 6 months old, both circa £38k

In December I bought a 10 month old 530d for 26k, 9k Miles. Granted, it was only standard spec. S Class of similar age was a lot more money (10K-15k+) but obviously it’s another level of refinement and quality.
