Interested in PH's view as to what are some of the best GT cars that can be bought new or used under £40k today. My current stable includes a boring Ford Mondeo diesel which is about to go back as it is a company car and change of jobs means I don't need something like that anymore, plus a 1999 Mazda RX-7 which is my weekend toy and gets driven only 2,000-3,000 miles per year. Whilst the FD is set up as a road car that can do the occasional track day, it is still far from practical, comfortable (suspension is rock hard) and modern enough to use as a GT.

I suppose quite a lot can fit the bill as a GT car which is reasonably dynamic, fast, comfortable and practical. Something along the lines of the classic example of a Maserati Gran Turismo feels like it would fit the bill but I don't desire something so large and wide. In reality, if I can get one hard suitcase in the boot that is probably practical enough.

But what is out there that can do the job of a GT while being engaging and not potentially breaking the bank on reliability and consumable parts out of warranty?

A MKIV Supra is a GT car, and would compliment the RX7 nicely biggrin

It's entirely down to personal taste. My first thought is a Mercedes SL or DB9, but if you think a Maserati GT is too big, then that would apply to the Merc and big Aston too. How about an Evora, Aston Vantage or 911?

Yeah, let's break the bank on keeping that thing on the road!

Nice choice though! Certainly interesting if I was prepared to pay an equivalent amount servicing and restoring whatever needs doing on it.

Looked into these and older R32 and R33 Skylines for ages and just could never find one that ticked the boxes in terms of condition, even before prices went nuts. Supras over here are all automatics and the guys with manuals want buckets of cash for cars with 100,000 miles on them and not in the best exterior shape. Skylines all generally looked rough when I was looking and they didn't actually drive as nice as the Supra or RX-7.

Good shout though trying to stay JDM!

My issue with Aston's is that they seem to rattle like crazy, not dissimilar to the RX-7 with its squeaks and rattles, although the interior is miles cheaper in quality and finish than the Aston so you wonder why it rattles so much as well.

911 is always a candidate and easy to sell onwards I guess given its popularity, but something like the Evora ticks more boxes for me due to rarity. However, I know a few Lotus guys and they really struggle to shift those cars later on due to a small market, similar to the FD in that it is just very niche.

Hmm...never crossed my mind but it actually ticks a few boxes other than it might be quite large. Never sat in one so not actually so sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

I wonder if the FK8 CTR Would fit your bill. It's quite practical, and I've heard good things about it in comfort mode; Yet still very potent when required; Not sure how loud it would be for sustained cruises.

I don't know what the best is but I have found myself spending more time than usual looking at the BMW M6 Gran coupe.

No bigger than many coupes such as those from BMW or Merc.

Should be very reliable and cheap to run and pretty good residuals at the moment.

Boot is pretty usable and of course the rear seats make it easy to chuck stuff in the back too.

R231 SL63's are looking like a very nice buy at £40k (ish) these days.

Plenty of grand touring power from the 530 bhp/727 Nm 5.5 litre twin turbo V8. Lovely folding panoramic convertible roof, all the gadgets you could ever need. Most importantly, big plush seats for long hauls...

This example is a little over budget at £43,995 but only has 21k on the clock. They can be had for £37.5k if you double that mileage.

If you can live with the porcine looks. The pre facelift version of this design looks WAYYY better. This facelift will probably go down as one of the worst ever.
