Just a quick one really, there are a lot of Mazda CX7's around for not far above shed money that have the 2.3 turbo engine in. I'm looking for a car for my wife to run the kids around and be a bit of a load lugger for holidays - is there a reason that these CX7s are so cheap? I'm guessing road tax and fuel are prohibitive compared to smaller diesel alternatives but I'm happy to pay these higher running costs as I really don't want a diesel and my wife's mileage will be quite limited anyway.

My main worry is these are a bit of a horror show on reliability. Google shows a few complaints from back when the car was new that affected the range and any searches about that engine just return loads of stuff about the Focus RS, but I thought I'd canvas opinion on here before I make a potentially expensive mistake!

I had a Mazda 6 MPS which had the same engine and didn't have any problems at all. Decent enough performance (perhaps even mild sleeper territory) and if nursed it could also be quite economical. Check for rust.

Aren't those the engines that suffer from the well documented VVT issues? That, combined with high VED and poor MPG would make me consider alternatives.

The engine isn't the best in terms of reliability, if you're considering the CX-7 take a look at the Subaru Tribeca.
