Car to run instead of the MK1 TT.
Discussion
I Have my Audi TT as my daily ATM!
But as travelling becomes longer it'll be to much to run so looking at a nippy run around that will allow me to take the TT off the road as I completely refresh the front and rear subframes.
Would like :
--Better than 25mpg average. 40+ preferred.
--Cheap insurance, Audi will go down if I have this car as the main car!
--Size isn't a huge factor as I've been looking at the up gti, but anything really will be bigger than the TT.
--abit of pace/fun to drive, 0-60 under 9 seconds, probably petrol.
I've had a ST3 2014 but it getting stolen/broken into I sold it as it wasn't worth the stress and insurance was mental!
I have been looking at lease deals and finance as well as older cars outright. With about £1500 deposit available and £150 a month but cheaper the better.
Any ideas?

Mk1 or mk2 Audi S3? Later mk1s have 220hp and are a bit lighter than a TT. Hold their value which is good come resale. Nice leather Recaros (heated options) aswell.
Tbh I'm looking for something that wouldn't be the same platform! More of a run about! But not a bad idea! But I'd end up spending loads doing that up too! stedaley said:

Saab 9-3 I hadn't even thought of, I'll have a look! Don't they run off the Vectra platform?

Twingo 133, swift sport, yaris 1.8 Sr. All practical and will do 40+ mpg
These have all popped up whilst looking, I just never know how Toyota manage 133hp out of a 1.8! Twingo is abit sparce in the cabin, swift sport is a good option, and I've never seen the SR Yaris! [edit] just read you wanted to avoid the same platform LOL!
MK4 Golf GT TDI, same as the MK1 TT but in a less posh frock.
Spend £1k'ish getting the best you can find then your other £500 getting it sorted for reliability, belts, front wings etc if not already done. A cheap remap will see a stock 130hp version up to 150-180hp. The massive spikey torque delivery of the early PD engines makes them feel faster than they are, not that they are particularly slow anyway. Still great fun even 20 years after launch.... and 45+ mpg if you baby them along.
Or a 180hp 1.8t as fitted to some MK1 TT's, much more thirsty and not much quicker than the TDI.
Without any bias at all, I have a feeling the faster MK4's will soon start appreciating in value as well. Just modern enough but without the over complexity of current stuff. Now is the time to buy one, they are at rock bottom price wise. I don't think they will ever reach MK2 values but I don't think in the next five years you'll lose any money on one. The difficulty will be finding one that has not been messed with.

I have a 133 cup that I have had for nearly 6 years, 4 of them were for a daily. I have a cup so luxurys are CD player and electric windows and that's it! It all adds to the charm yo me the non cups or gordini get lots more kit. It you want something that will make you smile every time you drive it from a driving point of view get a Twingo. I did drive a swift and the Twingo wins hands down. Its been faultless in my ownership only needing service items. Kia Pro Ceed GT

Giulietta Veloce Great cars that as reliable as anything else out there which means you can spend more time & money on the TT.

My third pick would be the Astra GTC in either SRI 180 form:

Limited Edition 200

Astra SRI 200 Newer car which makes them cracking value & they're a very decent car.

Does the lack of 6th not get tiresome? Thats the main issue putting me off! colin_p][edit said:

unusual ideas are still appreciated! do the PD 130 engines have any issues? I was originally looking at the skoda Fabia VRs but for what they were i didnt see myself driving it! Mt TT has the BAM 1.8T engine and it gluggs the fuel down! Possibly the cheapest option so far! and a very tasty one on ebay for £1500 with all the major work done it seems! And after doing the math the insurance is more than all the cars mentioned so far for some reason....MK4 Golf GT TDI, same as the MK1 TT but in a less posh frock.
