VW Golf R Estate & Seat Leon ST Cupra? Family Duties
Discussion
Hey everyone.
I need some more advice from people who own or have owned these.
I'm still undecided on these two, thanks to those who commented on my other thread. Don't really want to go down the SUV route if I can help and I think that most SUV boots are smaller than these boots on these two cars and I think estates are more practical unless you go for something like an S-MAX.
Now how do both of these handle as a daily and holiday family car?
They look like they should be fine for such duties but had test drive in Leon Cupra st today (not tested the golf r estate yet) and with pram in boot still didn't look like there is as much space as I originally thought although might be overthinking things and probably is enough room.
How do they handle as holiday car? Fit enough stuff including pram in them to go on holiday? Also do people use a roof box on there just to fit a few extra bits in?
Many thanks all, if anyone can share any photos of the cars loaded up to get an idea that would be great.

I have a Cupra ST 4Drive and fine boot space fine. Tend to have my boot floor on the lower of the two positions, find it a bit shallow on the higher setting
Chose it over the R estate purely because I prefer the looks and the R with the adaptive dampers and 19" Pretorias (detest the standard R wheels) was about £50 per month more
7 months in and no squeaks orcrattles and gets a lot of positive comments

Always managed fine in ours, at the end of the day it’s a 605L boot, so the only way of getting significantly more space is to go up a size to the likes of the A6, V90 etc.

Looks like it can fit loads in there. Do you have any child seats in there? If you do how do they fit? If you don't just ignore the question :-)
Was thinking more last night but if I need more room then roof box on one of these might be the answer.

Awesome, not test driven the new 4wd version bit I presume it's similar to the 290 version?Chose it over the R estate purely because I prefer the looks and the R with the adaptive dampers and 19" Pretorias (detest the standard R wheels) was about £50 per month more

Do you gave child seats in yours? Just trying to see if it has more room in back over my current v49.
No complaints from my 3 kids in the back of the Cupra, and I have the seat nearly all the way back.
Also someone drove in to the side of mine, and ingress in to the passenger compartment, so the safety is ok.
Having sat (not driven) a Golf R, the inside of the Golf is nicer, but not worth an extra £50 a month. I think Seat servicing is slightly cheaper as well.
Not sure if the Golf estates are as much of a theft risk as the hatchback?
You can fit plenty of stuff in the boot as well.
Just buy on price.

Is that 3 child seats in the back?

Yes, two Recaro Monza Nova 2 stage 3 child seats. The kids (10 and 7) have plenty of room in the back. I do have a Thule Ranger 90 roof box but have only had to use it once when we went camping in the Lake District for a week. Was thinking more last night but if I need more room then roof box on one of these might be the answer.
Worth bearing in mind that the 7 speed DSG ‘box in the MK7.5 R makes motorway journeys a bit more pleasant particularly if you use Eco mode. I’ve achieved 48mpg on a 100 mile round trip.
I have the Cupra but no pram / kiddie duties yet. I'm hoping it will be fine!
Takes a decent sized dog travel crate without removing the load cover completely though which is handy.
If you're comparing new (or nearly new) it's really swings and roundabouts between the 2, so buy on price or whichever you prefer the look of.
Drivetrain is the same (the Cupra is 7 speed since October 2018).
Golf has winter pack as standard.
Cupra has adaptive suspension as standard.
Both have digital instrument cluster.
Golf has (arguably) a nicer dash.
Cupra has (arguably) nicer seats.
Golf is more refined for road noise.
Cupra is more refined for ride (adaptive suspension).
Golf has a bigger boot due to the more square rear end.
Cupra has 2 exhausts rather than the (slightly silly) 4 on the Golf.
Golf is (potentially) more likely to be stolen.
