Looking to replace my 7 series on PCP with something different and pay cash to get out of the PCP cycle and reduce my costs. Looking at large SUVs ideally, luxurious and comfortable, lots of toys and good fun.

My budget is 15k tops, and currently leaning toward an early facelift Range Rover 5.0 SC but the higher mileage at this sort of price and the unreliability reports put me off a little.

What else is out there that fits the bill? Must be a large SUV, had too many saloons and coupes and things like that as my daily driver so want something different.

Thanks

Thanks, I have considered Jeeps briefly, and that does look nice but it's not what I would call luxurious, maybe I'm wrong as I've not seen one in the flesh

Thanks, I've had something like 6 BMWs in a row so X5 is out but Q7 could be worth looking at. Don't know how compliant a ride they are though?

My foray into the large 4x4 market has included two Jeep GCs, one Discovery3 and one RR Vogue SE (4.4 V8). I would have the RR over any of them, any time. Yes, i've had to fork out £2k for upkeep to the RR over 2.5 years, but one of the Jeep GCs cost similar. The Disco was dull. £15k? i'd go for a Rangie every ttme.

My initial thought was Merc GL but not sure if they're actually any good.

Touareg is pretty comfy, can confirm as semi-frequent passenger. Not sure it's fun though.

Infiniti FX / QX70? Sportier, might be more fun. Depends how near a dealer you are I suppose.

Or buy a 2010 Nissan Murano for £6,500 and spend eight grand on a nice holiday

I must admit I’m still leaning towards a Rangie and there are a couple im interested in I’m just scared of the stories. I guess you only hear the bad ones though. It’s not so much the cost to fix it’s more the owners who say they spend 50% of the time with the dealer

hehe

I'm a serial BMW buyer too, I always say I'll try another brand and end up falling in love with a different beemer

An RR will always be the pinnacle I think it's juts slight image and reliability issues that cause doubt for me

One made had one and put 50k on it with zero issues, another barely put 20k on his in 3 years as it was always in the shop. The annoying thing for him was it wasn't major stuff, annoying niggles and electrical issues

I know I found myself looking at x5s again rofl but they just don’t do it for me apart from the brand new one which is amazing.

I just want someone to tell me that a rangie is ok, they’re not that bad after all and I’ll be fine!

I had a RR for a while that I purchased for a similar price. I loved it and it was a great car and I’m sure you’ll be fine!

I did have to spend another £4K on it a few months after purchasing it when the gearbox and transfer box all needed replacing but these things happen!

Yeah, that's my worry!

One question - im looking at a 5.0 SC model that's 2009 and has the stick gear lever which I believe is the 6 speed box. When did they change to the 8 speed and is the 6 speed still ok to have?

If it's the ZF 8 then that's the most magical wonderful autobox ever, not sure what the 6 would be

The ZF8 is also found in some other cars, although the brand escapes me wink

I think it is the same in the RR so would be worth going for (I'm 99% but my JLR beard isn't as thick and luscious as my BMW one)

problem is getting the 8 speed in my budget is tough, I've pretty much made an offer on an autobiography that has all the toys I want, 100k miles which is reasonable for this age, at the price I want and the only thing it doesn't have is the 8 speed. I think I can live with it I reckon.

They are. Mine's one of the early ones - 61 reg and has a 265bhp V6 diesel, height adjustable air suspension, diff lockers in the centre and rear, and low range.

It needs nothing special in terms of maintenance and can tow 3500Kg.
