Honda Civic 1.8 Type S alternatives/rivals?

Honda civic type s, seems like a good car on paper, slow but not deadly slow, reliable, economical, looks funky but there isn't many for sale, would be easier to source a FN2 Type R.
Apart from a recall on the coolant engine case they seem to be quite strong.

I have a max of £4500 to spend and wondered it there are some good alternatives to the 1.8 Type S?

Would need to be 3 door, 30+mpg, reliable, easy to maintain, "sporty". sub 10 0-60 2005+ I am a bit of a mileage we and not really a fan of 120k used cars, sounds like a money pit.

Must be petrol, I live close to the ULEZ bks and fell diesels value will flop around here.

My dad had 2 diesel ones of these and they were good. Even as someone who isn’t diesels biggest fan I would find it hard to argue in this case. It produces the same amount of power and a load more torque with no real downsides.

I'd say take a look at the Giulietta 170 in Veloce form they're very reliable & a decent steer too.

The Alfa's look interesting, more so the Giulietta 170, but I worry about the depreciation on those cars, but people seem very happy with their reliability, impressive looking car.

What depreciation are you expecting? A 4.5K car bought from dealer isn't going to worth a huge amount of money if you were to trade it back in immediately.

Depreciation is in line with all it's competitors in this segment Honda included, the car itself is very good the ride quality is better than the Civic too.

It's just I have seen recent Alfas going for pretty cheap. Mitos a few years ago that were only 4/5 years old going for about 1/3 of their rrp.

I might just go for a FN2 Type R, not quite 30mpg but is a similar price for a good one but the performance seems better, will have quite bad ride quality but for reliability and trust it seems unbeatable.


The Mito would be a bit too small, need some bootage for bicycle.
Giulietta 170 is quite nice, bit conservative looking for an alfa but not finding any in my price range yet that aren't cat n.

I am a bit of a vauxhall hater but the Astra seems okay, performance for a turbo isn't great so will see what insurance says.

You say Alfa's are going cheap but you can't find a Giulietta, if you compare costs they all depreciate at the same rate especially when you consider the cost new.

I can get 35mpg out of mine if i take it steady on a longer run and average 30-32 on my 10 mile daily commute. Just make sure you get one with 18's as the ride will be unbearable on 19's

That mpg is pretty good then on the type r.

For 4500 I can get a good example with sub 80k which seems like the best all round option.

I still like the gulieta or whatever it's called but a type r on 75k with a k20 is a bit more appealing that the Alfa close too 100k, i will check out the Alfa if there's one for sale locally.

I would put some 18s on the type r if got one with the 19s. I heard the ride was terrible.

My Mrs recently faced basically the same decision and went for the Type R.

Was never really a big fan of them but I think they have aged very well and the K20 engine is great. Only thing to watch for is rust along the top of the windscreen, I believe some of the newer cars were recalled for this.

I've got a 58 plate Civic and it had rusted along the top of the windscreen (under the rubber where it meets the roof). I read about it on CivInfo and took it to the local main dealer a couple of years ago. It didn't have a FSH and was out of warranty, but they accepted it and did the corrective work on it as a recall.

I never knew about the rust issue, fat chance they would take a 10-12 year old civic in for recall work but I guess it is something to keep eye out for and haggle with a seller if they have failed to notify.

I heard the 1.8 engine can crack casings and there was a recall for that.
