Hi

I'll be part ex'ing a 2011 Golf TDI Blue motion with 58k on it and pretty good nick. Full, main dealer and independent service history, fan belts changed on time etc.

Looking for cost to change of the car plus £5000. I think mines worth about £5k part ex. So I would be lookng for a car the dealer would take 10K for.

If I see a car for 11,500 on a forecourt Im guessing 10k is too low for a dealer to drop to?

So what are the sort of price drops/negotiations I might expect and any tips for doing so?

Thanks.

Most dealers are reluctant to come down by more than 5%.
Quite a lot now price as 'take it or leave it'.

The best chance of a good discount is a large dealer with targets to meet and a car that has almost reached its maximum time on the forecourt (after which company policy is that it goes to auction).

No chance of £1500 off a used car.
How much margin do you think the dealer has and is still able to make a profit after recon, advertising, prep work, warranty etc?
£3000???
They may prefer to keep the car they have if it's more desirable than yours, until the right punter comes along.

Most cars are priced competitively already as everyone sets “lowest price first” on the autotrader search. Factors in discount all depend on if the salesman needs end of month sales, the dealer needs them, how long the cars been sitting etc. You will always get someone on here going “I wafted the kesh in the salesman’s face and he knocked off 3 grand etc” but realistically you would be lucky to get 509 quid off if the car is priced fairly.

As others have said most dealers do not budge much on a used car. I imagine you could get £500 off or maybe try and get some free services something that would cost you a fair bit of money but the dealer very little.

Thanks all. I did wonder.

Theres a Golf thats been on a local independent dealers forecourt for a couple of months. Its a 2013 TSi SE DSG, 20,000 on it and its up for 11,500. I asked recently on here if that was fair and most people thought it was overpriced by £1000 or more. I'll give it a miss I think.

Thanks again. I'll keep £500 in mind as a future negotiating target.

Another way you could look at it..
When I last px'd a car I wanted £5.5k for it, which was slightly unrealistic but the dealer offered me £4k px so my counter was if they offered me £5k px I would pay list price for the car. They did and I accepted so effectively it was £1k off the list.
