Hi all,

New to the forums. biggrin

I'm having a car brought down from West Bromwich to view next week.

A 12 plate BMW M Sport 120d.

This is the car I originally wanted. The correct spec, mileage, colour, tinted back windows - everything! The BHP is around 190, and the MPG is amazing for such a fast car. Around 54+ city and 70+ motorway.

Now this will be my first proper car. (only been driving for a year and a half now) 😂

My last car was a 09 volkswagen E polo.

My insurance on that for this current year is £75 a month. If I were to insure this BMW it is only £108 for the month instead. I'm shocked it's soo low!

On finance they are wanting around 7.5k for the car. I was hoping to come on this forums for some advice.

Hopefully some recommendations for better alternatives?

Thank you for reading smile

Brad, the best advice I will give you is this.

Run a shed, for a while, keep costs low.

Use that money you would have spent, and open a good investment trust.

Buy higher risk yield shares

Watch the power of compound interest on shares built for capital growth, not income

Then, in 5 years time, you'll at least have a great deposit on cars steps above what you would otherwise would have had ever.

Just the advice he was looking for I'm sure, and as you know so much about his personal circumstances I'm sure you are also highly qualified to give it..

I appreciate the finincial help smile

I already have investments set up for my LISA, and I've also got an ISA with Vanguard. Currently putting in monthly installments to take advantage of the compound interest rates.

I just want to buy a new car aswell, and I just wanted an opinion on whether or not to go fro this car.

Can I get any better for the money? Its great on fuel, and fast. Its hard to find a relatively cheap car that's fuel efficient and not a abosukte TON to insure haha

I predict at least a couple of Alfa's + and an Infiniti or two if he can squeeze them into budget.

My son ran an 09 one for three years and loved it. Great all rounder, great economy and relatively cheap to insure given the performance. They remap / tuning box well with a decent increase in power and torque.

The best advice i can give you would be related to the engine - over service it. BMW servicing intervals are frankly scary on these engines and they like to take a bit of oil, so service it every 9k miles religiously and check it for oil fortnightly and keep it topped up to the max marker.

Thanks for the response smile

I appreciate the info will definitely come in useful when I get around to buying the car (if I decide to) biggrin

Just out of curiosity, how much did your son spend on the 09 120d? Was it M sport spec?

Does 7.5k seem reasonable for a 2012 model? It's done around 93k miles and had 2 previous owners.

On top of finance with the APR at around 10% overall for 3 years it will come to around £8250 for the car at a guess.

Be wary with this age of 120d. It has the N47 and although BMW "fixed" the timing chains on this with the current model 1 series they can still have issues with failing chains

Had no idea those even existed!

It seems a tuning box or remap takes them to 250BHP, which would be "nippy".

The total cost at 10% APR would be £8,657 and monthly repayments of £241 over 3 years ( with no deposit). You would have an asset - the car - at the end, but will need to budget for repairs.

7-10 years old is often an expensive time for cars, which age to the point where they need more than routine maintenance / consumables. Nothing to worry about if you budget appropriately; my current car is 12 years old and isn't about to fall apart.

If focusing only on the monthly payments, you may be able to find something decent and new for the same monthly, but with no asset at the end. Maintenance costs would be lower, but the car probably less attractive.

Get a spreadsheet going.

Oh - and you won't get anywhere near the quoted fuel economy.
