Auto or manual?

(I'd imagine auto for that kind of mileage)

I'd go for a mk7 golf. SE and above will come with DAB etc and most importantly adaptive cruise which is very good for long commutes

With the kind of miles you're going to be doing I agree a diesel would be best but I'd be making sure you buy a Euro6 spec diesel (auto radar cruise would be a nice options too) with the Euro6 in mind here are some options:

Infiniti Q50 now this would require you upping the budget up to between 11-14k to get a good one but they come with everything but the kitchen sink the drivetrain is Mercedes (same as the C220d) & depending on spec/year you'll have some warranty left or the option to extend it. These also come with adaptive cruise making motorway work a piece of cake.

For all the boring stuff - economy, reliability, practicality - I'd look at Auris hybrids in estate (Touring Sports) form. I ran one for 3 years, it averaged around 55mpg, was roomy and comfortable, and faultlessly reliable. £13k should be enough for a decent 2015 example.
