My daughter just bought a car

So I have just returned from a business trip to find that my silly daughter has bought a 56 plate Astra which she paid £2800 for. She bought it because she liked the colour. It’s from a private individual and my silly daughter didn’t open the bonnet or anything.
Unfortunately the coolant expansion tank is caked in mayo and so is under the oil filler cap. The car overheated and it doesn’t go into reverse without crunching. It has 140k on the clock too
To add further annoyance she met the seller in a car park. My daughter has saved up for years to buy a car and now she has lost everything. The car is fit for the breakers.
This is just a prime example of not listening to your father and being stupid. I hope she learns her lesson but wanted to share with pistonheads so they can see how daft she’s been.

I took my 18 year old daughter with me when we bought her first car. I showed her everything to look for, she now goes with her friends to help them when they look for cars.
Op - I am sorry to say that your daughter seems to have had a common sense bypass - I would blame the parents, but I having had teenagers I know they are quite capable of being incompetent morons completely on their own.

It's a difficult situation to come back to but what's life without bad experiences?

Tough lesson to learn, but happens to a lot of us in the early days.
Similar thing happened to my friend last year and he is 45, his mother begged him not to buy it but he went ahead and did. Lost about 5k and now has to work 2 jobs and get the bus to work. Edited by bowers on Tuesday 26th March 16:06

In good working order that’s worth maybe a third of what she paid. Did she not think it was odd that the others were advertised for a grand while that one was at £2.8k?
I speak as someone who paid £1700 three years ago for an Astra in that generation with two thirds the miles and the 2.0 turbo engine. Unless it’s a very nice VXR, the seller must have been astounded that someone actually answered the ad after chancing his arm like that.
