So here's background...

In March 2016 I bought an Alfa Romeo 159 from an Alfa specialist (who shall remain unnamed). The car I bought was a 159 TI, which I gather was basically the top of the range model. Below that model there were various other trim levels including Lusso.

I paid £11,500 for the car on the basis that it was a TI and they are fairly uncommon, thus attracting a premium over the other trim levels. Lussos were cheaper by a couple of grand at least.

However, as it transpired whenever I put the details into any online sites, it was coming up as a Lusso, despite having all the physical signs to show it was a TI - the body kit, wheels, suspension, interior trim, even the door sills. But even the V5 showed Lusso.

After a while I went in to an Alfa dealer and asked if they could check for me, and they printed me out a piece of paper which said "Lusso/TI", which they said meant it was a TI. I never got round to sending this to the DVLA and subsequently lost it, naturally.

I recently went into a different Alfa dealer last week to see if they could give me a similar print out so I could sort it before I sell it, but everything he put the plate into came back as Lusso. Then he put in the plate of another car he knew, and that came up as a TI.

Because the car comes up as a different trim level from what I thought I had bought (i.e. Lusso instead of TI), that means that not only did I pay more than I should have done in the first place, but also I cannot sell it for as much now.

So my question is this - do I have any comeback with the garage who sold it to me with a view to compensation, based on it having been mis-sold as a more expensive model, or will they just be able to argue that I should have sorted this out a long time ago? I don't really know my rights here.

All help is much appreciated!

Thanks

Very much this.

Oh and as someone who may one day find an excuse to buy a 159 TBi Ti, I have seen a fair number of cars described as Lusso but with Ti spec, IIANM they are later cars with the part leather interior?

So that's the thing - to all intents and purposes it is a TI. Everything you would associate with the TI this car has, including the full leather interior with perforated leather seats and steering wheel. However, officially it seems to be a Lusso.

Not having been in the game at the time this car was built, I don't know for definite the actual differences between a highly specced Lusso and a TI (I think it kind of equates to the same...).

If you do decide you want a 159 TBi TI I know someone who is looking to sell........

S3s/RS3s come back as A3's on reg checks etc. Doesn't mean the car is an A3 though.

However, when he put in the plate/VIN of another TI it did come up as a TI on his system.

Yes, I did. But I don't understand what he was saying with the two hopes and Bob is dead thing.

FFS..... Bob Hope and No Hope. The former being a film star and comedian of some note almost famous you might say like the phrase.

The car is a TI, it's just that a mistake was made when the licensing system was updated, happens on loads of cars

My 159 TBi Lusso showed up as a TI - didn't make it worth more money..

Yes, I have heard of Bob Hope, but thanks for the patronising explanation...

Since my user name also contains Bob I'm sure you can forgive my confusion at the rather obscurely worded comment.

That's interesting, as obviously I have no idea how widespread this is or how much of an issue it is.

Not really sure what to list it as when I sell it, but I guess I can just explain it all in the description.

laugh

My apologies.

There is a phrase:

"You have two hopes - No Hope and Bob Hope. Bob is dead"

Which means there is only No Hope remaining.

Which is what you have if you bought the car in March 2016.
