Seen a car at 20k. Has been with dealer a couple of months and they say (and showed me their purchase price/costs) at current price they are losing money on it. Hence they won’t haggle at all. They say the only thing they can do is full tank of fuel as that comes from a “different budget” that they have more leeway with. Anyone else experienced this? Are there other things that we could ask for from this “different budget” to make no haggling seem more acceptable?

Paying cash or using their finance? If the latter, you can negotiate the APR.

If you’ve got a p/ex get them to increase the valuation.

Beyond that, if they won’t budge on the headline figure, ask about chucking in extras - a couple of services, some posh mats, boot liner etc.

Which, no doubt, still all comes out of the sales budget.

If they won’t haggle, walk.

Hows it priced relative to comparable cars?

I'd rather have £20 off that car priced at £20K than £2,000 off the same car at another dealers for £22K.

If other dealer have similar cheaper, go there instead, if not you might have to accept you're not going to get a decent discount.
