Evening
Looking for new car for wife. She has previously had a 435d and loved it.
It was a very competent car but a bit soulless

Needs to be sub £35k and no more than 4 years old (ideally less)
Gets used for 60 mile round trip commute so needs decent mpg.
Saloon or coupe (no estates or hatchbacks for reasons I don’t fully understand)
4wd useful but not essential. Would love to get away from diesel but not sure how realistic that is.

Any suggestions gratefully received

Cheers

340i/440i
S5
BMW 240i
Jag XE 3.0 V6 S (MPG?)
Merc C300
Lexus RC 2.0 F Sport
Audi TTS
Infiniti Q60 2.0T
Nissan 370Z (unlikely to have high MPG)

Think S5 would be on my list as 4WD, capable of reasonable MPG, fast, comfortable, petrol etc etc

My suggestion is the Alpina D3/4 my OH loves her D3 the suspension is sublime as is the handling & the performance is very close to M3 levels (I had an F80 M3 so was able to compare) they're rare & I think it ticks all the boxes:

Some interesting suggestions thanks
640 is an option
Are the interiors on the alpinas better quality than standard 4? (Ie real leather)?

The 6 series is other worldly vs the 1/2/3/4 series and a big step up from the 5.

Yes they're real leather & depending on what the original owner spec'd extended leather is normal but these cars are very much spec dependent the LSD makes a nice difference.

But why would you get a 6 gc when you can get the G30 5 series for 35k, a better car in every way apart from perhaps looks

I don't think it is.

He'll get the 640 for 25kish.

The 6 series has the best build quality of any recent bmw(IMO). Shut lines/panel gaps are amazing.

Seeing as she loved the 435d...why change it? Get a newer one or as someone else suggested get a G30. At 60 miles a day a diesel makes sense and as she loved the 435d I see no point in flirting with a petrol.

The interior isn't even close (especially if you can find a GC with with optional full leather) and as above you can get a good one with the M Plus pack (HUD, HK Audio, 20" wheels) for £10k less than a G30 535.

The 640D GC is IMHO 'the' used BMW bargain. She is a big girl though, which could be an issue I suppose.

There’s quite a bit of space in the 6, she’ll fit in it fine :-)

Hmmmmmmmmm not sure. G30 is nice inside and obviously a lot more modern, newer idrive and more modern design etc. But yes the 6 GC looks cool as you like

I agree the new iDrive is a better system but twouldn't pay £10k for it. The GC is a lot more plush.

G30 5

6 GC

My brother in law has just had a G30 530i and while I've always liked the looks of them I do think that the 6 series stands out far more for me. I did think that it was nice inside though but still not quite as individual feeling as the 6.

He was in the market for the 5 and 6 series and he chose the 5...having driven and got up close to the 5 now I'd certainly go for the 6( I've already had a 640d though).

My thoughts exactly. I just started looking at 6 GCs this morning and couldn't believe what you could get for the money compared to 5 and even 3 series. Made me think that there must be something inherently wrong with them that I'm missing!

Morning
Many thanks for input on this
I, err I mean she, is leaning towards an m4
I am trying to justify the extra running costs on the basis that depreciation should be significantly less than on a newer 435d
Am I deluding myself ?
Cheers

Ps alpina would have been perfect but none for sale within 100m and I don’t have the time to organise remotely at the moment

The depreciation will be less on the M4 because it'll have suffered the worst of it's depreciation but I doubt the depreciation difference will cover the difference in running costs but I'm sure it will with some creative man maths wink

Here are some D3/5's

I'm not sure if any of the Alpina's are near you but they are well worth a look.
